why crushing all these cars, I see so many useable parts. Bumpers, hoods, lights, etc. That's thousands of dollars in parts

May we have to have them crushed and off the property by May , and that s even after we got an extention . Its lucky we got it done because we have the mobile crusher come in and we have to work on there schedule . They only come out like once or twice a year .
You may think that body parts are a hot seller but really that are hit and miss and body shops are so picky if the part is not totally perfect they wont work on them. There are not many real body men anymore . All they want to do is remove and replace.  My bread and butter is in drive train and mechanical parts.   We do sell quite a bit of body parts retail but mostly lights . Its really not worth warehousing more then that . Hood and fenders get hailed on really easy too so once stuff has been in the yard for 2 years its time to ship it off . If it doesnt sell in two years time its really not going to anytime soon . My parts are on 4 different nation wide locator services and my own web site so people can see what i have.

That's what a lot of people don't understand. Other than time in the army I have done collision work since 1968 till 2006. To make a paycheck you have to do 60-80 flat rate hours in a 45 hr. week. and you have to guarantee your work or you do it again for FREE. The insurance co. only gives you 1.0 hr to repair any damage on a used part. If the part has a crappy paint job on it it has to be stripped and prepped so it can be used. Yes, Stu is right, unless it is a real clean part you don't want it.  Aftermarket parts are another horror story to deal with. I could fill a book with stories and bore you for hours  about them.

popcrn  I'm glad i could sicken your stomach for the day , but my kidds need to eat   icon_smile_big icon_smile_big icon_smile_big icon_smile_big   I DON'T DEFEND THE HACKS THAT ARE "RESTORING" CARS but I do defend the prices that quality restorers are charging for their work. Stu's line above describes it well.  When cars outlive their usefulness  they get recycled. When the human body outlives its usefulness your sole gets recycled so we are on the same plain. That and $2.00 will get you a cup of coffee. :P

Truely one man's treasure is another man's garbage!:yesnod:

I've got a 1996 Dodge Ram 4x4....that needs a bunch of TLC (read $$$) right about now.
It doesn't have the suicide doors in the back like the 2000's, but I sure would be capable of swapping cabs to get that. And the shortbox is either going to need new side panels, or another whole box soon. Ditto for the front fenders.
I've been trying to find a used set of those bumper-mounted fog lights for 5 years. Supply in these here parts is practically non-existant.
Stuart...you gotta move closer!

And I'm crying looking at those flat Rams. :puke:

The parts are also not that expensive at the Pullapart type places. A hood is like $60, a Fender $35.

I fell the same way walking through junkyards, no matter what car it is, some one was excited about it once and took care of it.  I like wandering though them too, and looking at a certain car, and trying to figure out why no one loved it anymore and got rid of it.

cuase it was a furd or chuvy

Most definitely,  used sheet metal  has its place and it saves some vehicles from being totaled especially older stuff but for the first 3 years or so there is no room for error. What I am getting at is production line collision repair of newer vehicles. :paintingpink:
