I was thinking about putting Summit Racings part # SUM 6401 cam and lifter kit in my 440 while its out of the car.  I'm kind of on a budget and thought this would be a nice upgrade from the stock bumpstick.....until I read the disclaimer following the little (*).  It states that this cam will not work in 66 & 67 440's.  My block was cast 7-15-66 so technically its a 67 block.  I don't see this problem popping up with any other cams from any other manufacturers.  Can someone shed some light on why a certain cam wouldn't work in an early cast 440?
Thanks

I looked up that part at Summit and found no warnings of any kind  :shruggy:
I looked at SUM 6401 & SUM K6401... nothing  :shruggy:

HUH ? :shruggy:
Thats news to me,
I don't know of any differences, other than the Lifter Ht. and Pushrod lengths on the 66/67's ?

Cams are the same far as I know ?
Only wimps wear Bowties !

I know I thought that was strange at first until I found out the reason why, they use a smaller ball end pushrod that goes into the lifter and the normal larger ball end in the rocker arm up till 67 and 68's on up they changed to the larger ball on both ends so if you change to 68 and up pushrods along with the cam and lifters you will be fine with any of newer cams.

The disclaimer is listed in their catalogs.  I too saw no warnings on their web site which created even more confusion!!!  I will have to check and see what push rods I have, as the top end of the motor seems to be from mid year '68 which would be the correct casting dates for my car.  8/68 build date.  I'm thinking that at some point the short block was replaced with a reman. engine (nice generic blue paint on block) and the top end remains original to the car.
What should I be looking for with the '68 and up pushrods?
Thanks again!

3 pics of a pushrod out of my motor.  The ends look the same to me.  First pic is side shot, next two are both ends.

Those look like the correct style of pushrod for 68 and up, the older ones have an obvious taper on one end and are noticably smaller.

i agree the earlier 66/67's have a very noticable taper on one end of them. the ones in the photos appear to be the later ones, it's possible someone may have changed the cam, lifters and push rods sometime in the past.

I have used solid cams in 66-67 blocks with no issues , I know the oil groove was at  a different height on the early blocks but that would just affect the lifter not the cam
