hi - i have a rear defroster with the lines in the glass - nobody is making the rear window with the lines in it yet - is there a way to repair the lines on window??  it seems that pieces came off and some of the lines will not work anymore.  thanks

E5 Charger

Here is one company that offers a kit, http://www.frostfighter.com/, but you should be able to buy one at any auto parts store.

I'm on the fence about those things.  A rear window defroster is mandatory for the real world, but the window lines don't look right on most old cars.

The heater/fan blower based defroster setups seem like a nice compromise but they eat a ton of electrical power.

I have tested, NEVER like the front heater-A/C blower... DAMN... THAT EAT POWER. At a side the front blower, rear deff blower consumption is practically unapreciable.

would like to know about the electrical defrost consumption... it does use a Relay to feed it, so I think eats lot of power too. More in fact than the blower itself

With old Mopars, I think the factory rear defrosters didn't even heat the air at all.  I think it was just a fan blower and that's it.

Nacho-RT74

yes is just a blower, but I mean front blower ( no matter if to AC or Heater, is the same blower ) againts the rear blower, the rear one is allmost unnapreciable in consumption

i thought there was some type of heating element in the rear fan blower type defoggers??

moparstuart

my first 69 roadrunner had one , it had no heating element  it just blow cold air out of the trunk !
GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

The resistor on rear blower is just the speed resistor selected from the dash switch. Both wires sends 12 volts and then depending ifr you selected High or low speed ( feeded by white or black wire ), power goes throught resistor or not

rear blower takes air from inside the cab, through 6x9 "speaker" cut out and slots on package tray

BROCK

Yep, the front provides the heat & the rear just recirculates interior air whether hot or cold.

what was dodge thinking at the time??  just blow air on rear window??

BROCK

It worked!  Afterall condensation is just moisture falling out of the air as it approaches a
colder surface.  By moving the air near the glass, condensation eventually reversed itself.
The rear window defogger moved the air:  Crude, but effective.

does work! at least for me.

FRONT DEFROST works the same. No heating or colding element on front defrost, just take exterior air and blows to glass. The diff between VENT and DEFF function on front is just the air route ( vacuum actuators ) and not selection on speed to the DEFF like on HEAT function

There's an aluminium paint you can purchase to repair the lines...you just paint the portions of the lines where the current breaks...take a test light with the defroster on and follow the grids 'till you find an open and repair it..continue along and repair all the lines...system works like a toaster and ya it does draw alot of power...done plenty and works fine..I use it at work with a Ford product line of defroster grid repair...

Electric defrosters are nice when the windows have frost on them...(that's like ice on your window nacho  :yesnod:)...the caveman blowers take like a half hour of driving to get a fist sized hole you can see out of....Brrrrr! Canada
When did electric defrosters become available in Charger's? '73  :shruggy:

yeah I know, althought you don't believe, we have some of that down here too  :yesnod: ... not in my city thought

and yes, blower takes more time, but still work. I have had to use when get condensation outside due A/C inside OR too much cold outside what don't get to frost but lots of consensation too

I think first time for the electrical heating glass element was 74. They appear on 74 brochures. Would need to check on hamtrack website to be sure

I have both in my '71  :o ...I changed all my glass to OEM tinted from the original clear..'71 SE a/c donor car for the glass and I guess it was a '74 for the rear window...can't quite remember exactly now..musta bin 20 years ago  :eek2:

Don't know if it is still available but at one time Loctite sold a repair product for this application. It was a small bottle of liquid with a tiny brush in it. You painted this stuff over the gap and it re-established the circuit in that line. Try some good auto parts stores.

AMD makes the rear glass for a 74 charger - but they do not have the one with defroster lines it as of yet - they might have them in the near future.
