'69 Dodge 727 - Throttle Pressure Linkage & Shaft

I am ready to adjust the throttle linkages on my '69 Charger 440 with the 727 Torqueflite using the procedures from the 1969 Service Manual.  I located the procedure on page 21-53 and I have run into an issue with the very first step.

Step 3 - Hold the transmission lever (part # 11) firmly forward against its stop.

Here is where I have the problem.

The lever has spring tension when I move it towards the back of the car however when I push it forward it goes as far as it can and rests against the body of the transmission.  I don't feel a "stop" as the service manual suggests.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Maybe this will help further describe my situation.

The shorther of the two levers moves all the way forward, right up against the housing.

Is this normal?

Thanks for the photo Mally.

Mike, while I'm not entirely sure, if the lever is hitting the case, couldnt you just loosen the jam nut and back it off a bit?   Or is the shaft keyed one way?  Is it possible the lever is upside down?  I did away with all that stuff when I went with the manual VB (except the linkage at the carb)
Any way a free bump for you till John K. our resident trans guru sees this & replies

If the lever moves forward enough to contact the case there's two possibilities, either the tang on the internal cam isn't contacting the stop screw on the valve body or the weld that attaches the shaft to the internal cam has broken. In either case the pan needs to come off for a look see.

The Phillips head of the stop screw is visible tucked up under the lever in the right side of the pic below.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I have spring tension when I push the bracket towards the rear of the car so I am going to guess that the cam is missing the stop screw or the stop screw is missing all together as if the weld on the shaft was broken there would be no tension - true?.

We (my Father-in-Law) kinda figured the pan will need to come off.

Thanks for the reply.

I looked at whether or not the previous owner had put the bracket on upside or not but it only seems to go on one way.  There is a flat spot so it eliminates putting it on the wrong way or in a too far forward or too far rearward position.

What is a manual valve body?

Thanks.

Mike, a manual VB means that there is no automatic upshift/downshift features....and no kickdown linkage required. You have to manually shift through the gears like a standard transmission. Several companies make performance manual valve bodies. I have a Turbo Action manual VB going in mine.

Thats what I have (Turbo Action) reverse pattern with no engine braking in first gear. ....the one that is "Not intended for street use"  ::)

Running my stock shifter with a Shift-R-Gate from Duncan Engineering (I was his test mule for the reverse pattern ones)  no more missed 2nd gear! :drive:

PS---I see he sells the decals now as well.  I got mine a while ago from a Moparts member....actually I think thats my pic he used on his site

Most likely, but I've seen the welds break in such a way that the weld "blob" will engage the shaft in one direction and spin free in the other.

We might have some time to take the pan off on Tuesday to see what we have to deal with.

Thanks.
