New York City tourist info request

Good day

We wanted to zip up to NYC for a weekend next month but want to be smart on getting around. I plan on parking outside the city and taking a train in..I've heard bad stuff about parking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can park in NYC, but it won't be cheap & it won't be easy getting around by car. I would consider parking in NJ & taking a train or bus in to make it easier, but it really depends on where in NYC you plan to go. I've been out of the city too long to tell you where to park, but maybe some of the NJ & NYC are members can point it out. Lots of parking restrictions & changes in the last few years.

I agree with Old Moparz, try to park outside of NYC and take train, bus and/or limo. Make sure you hit the theater district - Phantom of the Opera 

I'm not an opera fan, but that play was outstanding! Museums are pretty cool, including the aircraft carrier Intrepid - true awesome warbirds and true military USA muscle on display.

There is not a place in NYC that you cannot access by public transportation.

When I went this summer, I took the train in.  Once in the city, I either walked, or took a taxi.

Avoid the typical tourist spots if possible, & don't look like a tourist & you'll have a good time.

The Greenwich Village area is always a cool place to hang out & walk around if the weather is nice. There are lots of small clubs on Bleeker Street that will have bands to see on any night of the week. Food choices are all over, but as I said earlier, I haven't been to the city on a regular basis in a long time to say where to go. There was a small Spanish/Portuguese restaurant on Bleeker not far from 6th Ave. that was one of the best places I ever ate at. My wife & I ordered a Shrimp meal that was loaded with shrimp & had lots of garlic.

On the east side, there's always McSorley's Ale House. It's the oldest pub & was open during prohibition. You can eat there, but there's only like 4 things on the menu. Liverwurst sandwich on rye, liverwurst on crackers with cheese, chees & crackers & the hotest mustard to clear out the sinuses. They have McSorley's Ale & McSorley's Dark to drink. If there's no line to get in, you're lucky, but it's worth just stopping in for at least a couple of beers to see it.

How about some good old plain New York City Pizza? Famous Ray's on the west side is great, but there are so many Famous Ray's you have to know which one. This one was always good as a late night place to stop on the way home when you are out of money & have just enough for a slice. It's been a while since I've been there, but it was one of the best. Might be a good alternative to liverwurst if you have to.

Want a GOOD hot dog? Go to Gray's Papaya if you're on Broadway further uptown. There's nothing like it, but expect to know what you want before you get on line or the guys behind the counter will have the bouncers drag you to the sidewalk if the other customers don't.

OK...well thanks for the colorful play suggestions. Points of interest are all on Manhattan

2) Statue of Liberty
3) Empire state building
4) Broadway

Real question I guess is suggested SECURE parking/train stations on the NJ side, we'll be coming up 95/turnpike from VA

Well, that rules out the clubs at night or a few beers in McSorley's.  

There is a 4 story Toy's R Us in Times Square, it has a ferris wheel inside thats almost 4 stories. They have a mechanical T-Rex that's full scale too. I've taken my daughter who's 6 now, & she loves it. The store is on the corner & you can't miss it.
