hi all!  i just bought a 68 satillite w/ a nice torquey 446. it came w/ a dyno sheet that said 407hp. i forget at what rpm. but massive amouts of torque. i plan on putting on my new stealth heads, its got 10.1 comp. so i was gonna change the cam to. but im worried about the rear end being able to handle some upgrades.
from what i can see it has a 7 1/4 rear end. ive herd alot of bad things with the two together. and its also got a 2800 stall and shift kit. so im worried its gonna take a crap on me.
i was dumpster diving at the wrecking yard the other day and came across a 69 fury 4 dr, w/ a 8 3/4 489.

i was wondering if it will fit right on my new 68 satillite? or is it to wide?
and will i need a new driveshaft, or any other new parts for the swap?

if anyone can help? thanks all! :shruggy:

terrible one

I think that the C body rear will be too long in the B body, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think you could even get a 7 1/4 in anything but an A-body. I think that 68 Chargers all got 8 3/4 rears.

8 1/4 was standard.  8 3/4 optional, standard with 383 magnum, DANA standard on 426/440 cars with 4 speed, optional on auto.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

hard-charger

lol.......... i can rule out for sure that it isnt a 8 3/4. ill jack the car up today and see if i can get better look.
at fist i ruled it out as a 8 1/4. if it is, will it be strong enough for the proposed combo?
thanks!!!

bordin34

No, a 8 1/4 can only handle about 300-335hp then it will fail. The 7 1/4 can handle about 25-50hp then it will explode.

The 8 1/4" didn't come out until '69, a '68 Satellite could have a 7 1/4".
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The Fury rear is definitely too wide to use on that year B-body.

is there any identification marks or numbers? like on my 8 3/4 rear. ther is a number and 489 stamped on the side.
is there anything like that on a dana 60 and 7 1/4? thanks again!

bordin34

I do not know for sure, but I believe there is a casted somewhere on the housing. Also, it should be nearly impossible to confuse the two. If the rear is small like really small it is a 7 1/4, if it is big, the rear is not a 7 1/4.

Also, I think but I am not sure that 7 1/4 rears have tapered tubes.

You can't confuse an 8.75" rear with any of the other Mopar rear ends.

It's the only banjo-style one.  Dropout front casting, and no detachable cover of any sort on the back.

It's basically a Mopar version of the Ford 9-inch.

I know the 7 1/4 rears were available in 68 Chargers. My car was a slant six charger and thats what it came with.
