There's really no difference in losing a fuel pump and voluntarily choosing to make a trip across the US without a spare tire.   :Twocents:

Thats not why I said that. IMO, that Rawlings guy is a retard. Look at the video of him arriving into Calgary..

I really don't see any reason to bash Mike about the car or the lack of a spare, BUT geez the brown nosing IS getting really old. :icon_smile_blackeye: I realize Mike is in a really cool position and all,but I have my doubts that even he like someone kissin his arse.  :Twocents:

Looks like this leg ends in Park City Utah. whew :smilielol:

Kind of salty thereabouts, isn't it?
When, yesterday or today? I can't get into CarDomain here at work. :(
That's a bummer about the tire & assorted gremlins. I hope Angrier runs flawlessly next year.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Did not think grade 8 bolts (if they are) would fracture like that. Brittle fracture - no ductility indicated at all. Probably a bad batch. And as I recall those wheels are one of a kind design...may just need some tweeking/stronger fasteners. Interesting that the broken bolts bracket the wheel balancing weights....  :scratchchin:

Being one of a kind you have to question how much engineering and testing they have? Scary stuff for as fast as that car could probably go. Good thing it wasnt catestrophic at failure.  Whew!

ok after all that ...all I have to say is that if I can get Mike's permission I am getting Angrier Inc. stickers for my new charger....they look sick as hell on the car.  I wasn't too sure (thought they were cool, but not sick) when I first saw them, but now...WOW!!!!

Man, Mike you rock dude (go ahead and bash me for kissing his arse). I hope that you have better luck next year though.

QuoteThen I verified that the bolt had six lines on it indicating it is grade 8 as per the chart.

If those are 1/4 bolts, that's a yield of 5000lbs per bolt. It would be very interesting to find out what would have caused those failures....

My educated guess is that the wheel was not balanced correctly and over stressed/fatigued the bolts at that location. How many miles were put on that wheel? :-\

I was not sure how to ID grade 8 bolts so I googled and found this:
http://www.engineershandbook.com/Tables/boltgrades.htm

Then I verified that the bolt had six lines on it indicating it is grade 8 as per the chart.
Learned something new today!!!  ;D

Also talked with Mike today and he is doing the write up on his trip...... I dont want to post any spoilers.  :slap: he had one helluva trip.

BTW Carrier will pick up Angrier on thursday for its trip home. Gonna get a few more pics and vids. (One for the wicked sound post)
Any specific Pic Requests???

Thanks Max  :2thumbs:

Interesting that several grade 8 bolts would fail like that  :scratchchin:

Looking forward to Mike's trip report  :icon_smile_cool:

Hey guys -

I am writing up a full report and should have it ready by tonight or tomorrow am. Right now though I just overloaded with stuff... I promise though that everyone will have a full description of everything soon.

Sorry for the  delay.

Cheers - Mike

The fasteners in the picture are 5/16 grade eight. Very strong. Unfortunately when you have a tire go down with a multipiece wheel the rim shelll usually contacts the ground through the deflated tire and creates enormous stresses on the fasteners. Typically they will shear, as in the picture. If the tire was running low for any period of time the loads on the bolts would have been very high and they would have fatigued quickly. Take care
