:scratchchin: the latest home remodleing idea i have is to build a false wall six-seven inches in front of the existing wall, so i can recess the flat screen t.v. speakers and other stuff behind so it appears flushed out,..
this would also allow me to hide the power strip, wires and unsightly stuff maybe even incorporate some storage shelf space... but because the closet abuts this back wall i figure i'd have to stop short of the closet so it will open fully,.. which is the only sticking point i can see...
any thoughts or suggestions/recommendations on this would be appreciated, would a couple pieces of floor to ceiling sheetrock supported with 2x4s behind be enough to support this nineth wonder of the world?..  :shruggy:
i'm gonna attach a couple pics... inna min..

Brock Samson

here's the mess behind as you can see it's allready pretty bad.
another concern is access to the back of stuff once installed... any thoughts on that?
since the new 46" Samsung i got my eyes on will also have all the surround sound hook-up with the sub woofer and sattilight speakers and blue ray and provider box the assoc. wiring it will be a knot of wires and speakers i want to hide... and yet have access to.

Brock,

Shoot me a pm and I'll answer all of your questions. I am a general contractor, a landscape contractor and a professional engineer. I should be able to get you a solution (but now i'm off to mow the front yard!)  :P

Well, we're hosting a Little League party tomorrow, and the wife and I are endeavoring to get ready. Hours to go before I stop sweating....

This heat wave is a doozy, all right. How is the weather up in San Fran? Getting any of that Bay breeze?

I'm off to pick up my daughter, from summer school, in the Charger. Need to fill it up to give the kiddies tomorrow some "fun" rides.  :D  They will not soon forget tomorrow....

I've been known to dabble in construction projects....    We need measurements of the wall from left to right.  What is the closet used for?  What is on the back side of the closet?  Can you sketch a drawing of your floor plan and post it up?

I've been thinking about something similar for the family room.

Just ideas so far, but maybe they'll help.

I can't have access from the other side of the wall because it's an outside wall. So, I was thinking about swing out racks for the gear.
The home theatre installers use them all the time, but the thought came to me while working on a customer's data network - they had a swing out rack for their LAN gear.

My plan is to have built in bookcases to flank the the fireplace and have a false wall bridging the two bookcases.
The flat screen would mount on the false wall over the fireplace and the cables would run behind the wall to one of the bookcases where I'd have all the gear in a swing out rack.

I see with your door so close to the wall, you may not be able to build out into the room, but maybe some combination of my idea and pushing back the wall might be the answer. I think only a good builder could answer that and only if they are looking at it.

Hate to ask a stupid question but why can't you just go into the wall that is there? Is it an exterior or plumbing wall or sumpin?

move the closet door over a little and/or move the hinges to the other side....

thanks guys,..
that wall abuts the next door house - two inches over as per code...
i moved a bathroom door once when it wouldn't open fully, moved the entire door two inches with the help of a contractor friend who's long since moved to so cal.
i'm gonna do some sketches soon, BTW: costco has a 47 inch TV - a westinghouse 1080 p for $900.oo...  :yesnod:

So its a shared wall? The 2 inches over is throwing me for a loop. Anyhow, if you are truly sharing a wall I would be concerned about putting speakers in the wall and transmitting sound into the neighbors through the structure.

That was my next suggestion. Moving a door is easy work. The work that is left concerning the floor covering can get tricky.

I don't think 1080p is worth the coin...

Very valid 6 months ago. But with the Blu-ray vs HDDVD war settled, 1080p sources are going to become more readily available, and cheaper.
