took car out sunday was about 90 degrees in the sun car got hot about 230 235 and stayed there to me thats to hot its a 383 with a driect 5 blade fan not a clutch ..nor do i have a shroud for it  i am running a 26 inch radiator but its in the 22 inch opening i know shroud will cool it down a little but what else can i try

I basically have the same set up.  Is your gauge reading correctly?  I read my engine with an infra-red thermometer and the gauge was off by 30 degrees too hot.  You can try to see if your carb is running too lean or if you have any coolant leaks anywhere.  These engines have to be perfectly sealed otherwise any coolant or pressure leaks will make it run hot I have noticed.

does the radiator boil over ?    I would get an infared thermometer and take the temp at the thermostat housing....       if your gauge is readin incorrectly - go to your local mopar dealership and get a new temp sender...    you have a GM sender which makes the gauge rear 30* hotter usually...     other option would be adding a 15ohm resistor in your temp wire.    :2thumbs:

we are using after market gauges custom dash

230'ish is "getting up there"

A little too hot for my liking, IMO, if the gauge is accurate.

I think each 1 lb of Rad cap pressure, is good for raising the boiling point of water, by approx 3 degrees F ?

So, if you've got a 16 lb Cap, X 3 = 48 Deg above 212 @ sea level, or 260F before it starts gurgling and thump'in in the Rad ?

I "think" I remember the above correctly ?

No Matter, as mentioned, the carb/fuel perculation problems, as well as the Oil thinning at Temp are concerns IMO.

Can you increase the "under-hood" airflow to reduce Temp ?
It sounds like it was getting "lean" on the accelerator pump in the carb ?

I agree with Bob here....sounds like a lean a/f mixture issue  :Twocents:

16 pounds in reference to what? How are rad caps rated? Atmospheric at sea level is 14.7psi. Is it 16 pounds absolute or gage pressure? At 16 psi absolute, the boiling point of water is 216 F. If we're talking gage, with 14.7psi atm and 16 psi above (or in reference to) totalling 30.7 psi the boiling point of water is 252 F. Now throw some coolant into the mix.

it seems to go up higher the more gas i give it ... wich seems totally odd to me at idle it goes to 200-210 on a 90 degree day

BigBlockSam

200 on a 90 degree day , isn't bad

That seems like a pretty strong arguement for a lean condition.  :yesnod:

As was mentioned previously in this thread....look at the carb and fatten up the primary jetting.  :Twocents:

i took carb apart and measured float level says 1 inch from airhorn gasket to top of float mine was at 1 1/4  and changed the accelrator pump .. now how do i go about re jetting do i want to go bigger or smaller? this carb is a 750 edeljunk  for the record

onebadmopar

tried carb out seems better than before altho now we notice a antifreeze smell about midway under car  gotta be in exhaust altho no white smoke also oil has a substance on it cant tell if its water or still assemble lube ugggggg this is driving me crazy how can i check for a blown head gasket .. onthis brand new motor with out removing heads

onebadmopar

ok what ever is showing on the stick is gone after we pull it out and wipe it down 2-3 times im baffled its had one oil change since breakin .... still assembly lube in there maybe ?
