I thought I saw a place advertise a conversion kit that uses the original drum spindels...anyone else see or hear of this?

Thanks

Troy

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

ak, did the scarebird deal on my satellite, if you dont want gm calipers on your car then you wont like it.  but i didnt car sence it was a super brake upgrade and it was relitivly cheap in comparison to other options.  my car stops fantastic now.    theres some pics of the upgrade  at this websight, youll have to sort through the pics but anything that looks ike brakes are them  lol

Wilwood makes a kit for use with drum brake spindles also

Thanks Runner...nice pictures.

So you just bolt on a backing plate and then slip on the rotor and caliper? Since I'll be devating from "Stock" anyway as soon as I pull the drums off no big deal about the GM calipers...I just will not tell anyone   :-X

AKcharger

Wilwood looks cool but pricy...that scarebird stuff looks promising

Runner

ak, i bought most of my stuff from rock auto. let me see if i can find the compete price list and part#i had.  i had about 350 in the brake upgrade.

and yes, you just pull the backing plates off and bolt the adapter on. hardest part of the hole ordeap is cutting the swedged lugnuts off so you can get the drum off the spindle.

www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com uses the drum brake spindles.

That is the kit I used.   I got the groupbuy discount as well last year.   I believe Runningman is still offering the groupbuy discount now.

I paid $625 for the manual disc kit

As far as I know all the aftermarket disc brake kits use the original drum brake spindles.

AKcharger

I guess since I was just thinking about doing the A-body spindle swap I thought that was the ONLY way to go.
Thanks for the other source 6T9

Runner

ak,  i spent just about 1/2 of what the 6t9 spent.   one nice thing about the gm calipers is, you can get all kinds of different types of pads for them.  infact if you dont want to run a gm caliper, you can buy a wilwood replacement type for it.

The Master Power kit uses disc brake spindles (which are provided in the kit)

Give that man a cigar. Yep, most of these "aftermarket" disc conversions are using later model spindles off Valiant, Aspen, and Cordoba cars. I'm still not seeing the benefit to lining some companies pocket with hundreds of dollars when me and a couple of buddies have done the same thing for around $300 using Chrysler engineered parts. But that's just me... ;)

Yes sir,,  I agree with Bill 100%..

The GM calliper uses a huge piston that spreads out the pad pressure well.. I wouldn't be afraid of it if that's what you want..

Normal cruising to heavy traffic::::  I'll use the Aspen/Volare' disc set up..

Let me dust this thread off.  The SSB price is $850, so I need to find something cheaper.  Is it cheapest/easiest to use the Scarebird setup? I imagine the whole thing would be $300 or less.  What about the Volare setup, is that a whole brake conversion?  Whose MC to use on the Scarebird?

Wakko, do you have a (pick and pull), type bone yard down near you called LKQ? They have very good prices on parts and normally a very good mopar selection. I just pulled some 12" disc parts for a conversion on my 65' for under $80.00... The car had new rotors and calipers on it. I normally would not take them, but they were sooooo new!!! I still need spindles, master, bearings, seals, hoses and proportioning valve.  The spindles and prop. valve will come from a donor. The rest will be bought new.  I thought you bought an old police car for a donor car?? What happened to it? That was perfect.. Big brakes and had it all..

Another question: Are you going power or manual brakes? If you have power now and are going to manual brakes you will need a few more items depending on what master you go with. I am still in question here myself. Maybe someone with more info can chime in on the 4 bolt/2 bolt master and adjustable push rod need.   I am told that with the cast 4 bolt manual master you do NOT need an adjustable push rod.  Can anyone confirm this??

My old police car isn't really a police car and it's not a donor car, it's a driver.  We have very few junk yards around here, none are close, and all are a hassle.   What did you pull your parts off of?

A 73' c body..  Maybe a better way for you do go is to look for a complete donor car. Aspen, Valarie. Something along those lines. 5th Ave's are everywhere..  Find one cheap. Take what you need and junk the rest for the scrap money.

Most of the disc brake conversions that I know of use disc knuckles.  But there are a few kits that use drum knuckles.  I have a Viper kit that uses the late model drum knuckles since that is the easiest way to get the caliper into the correct location.  But I prefer to use the late model FMJ knuckles whenever possible for my conversion kits since they are lightweight, strong and plentiful.
