Hey very new to restoring cars like I said yesterday rebuilding th front suspension now. Are the upper ball jionts pressed in or threaded and what is the easiest way to get them out after the control arm is removed?? I ask this because the front suspesion is off the charger.

What year are you referring to? The majority of years had the upper ball joints screwed in.. There is a special socket used for it.. If you don't have access to an impact, then with it off, you'll have heck holding it in place.. You could temporarily place it back in the eccentric area, with a large breaker bar and unscrew it. Mind you, it'll be very tough... Impact's the way to go... Some auto part store rent/borrow out,, ball joint replaceement kits that usually have the socket in it... Any good machine shopo should have the proper tools as well............

Good luck..

Troy

PS: the socket looks like this..  I googled "Chrysler upper ball joint socket" and got some hits.. This is from the Sears site.

troy,

My charger is a 69 what exactly is that socket called?? Napa might have it.

It might be a little easier to replace the upper ball joint by bolting the control arm back on to the car as opposed to having the upper control arm off and trying to find a way to hold it while you thread out the ball jount.

I used my bench vise and had no problem removing the ball joints. I have never used a impact gun to remove the ball joint, too scared of  stripping out the threads.

73 are both threated... 74 are upper threated and lower pressed. I think in ALL, uppers are threated. Up 72 lowers are part of assembly and bolts directly to spindle and press to the lower control arm... doesn't ?
