Whats the latest on the charger market

up?..down?..or stagnant..reason i ask is i took the advice of some here and passed on my last find (68 charger rt)...hell i want to resto mod and really could not bear cutting up an original 68...as some know i also sold my 60rt off for 5 grand which netted myself a nice 2500 profit...sold to my buddy who has a local body shop and as the car was literally in pieces i did not have the time nor did i want to spend the monies to make that car roadworthy.....well i have a few more leads close and found a decent 70RT that is completed and actually runs..should i just splurge on that car or wait as in this current economy prices may fall...my personal observation is stuff is getting a little tougher to move and prices seem to be falling..any opinions???

If I had the magic crystal ball, I'd be carefully making my move to independent wealth and not telling anyone.

If you can find the right person now is the time to find a done car or a driver type car for a lot cheaper than you could 1-2 years ago. Probably $5k cheaper if not more

Ok guys, this might sound a bit cruel, but it is at least honest!!!!
The market will always go a little up and down, due to different situations around the world. The exhange rate makes it better for us in Europe to shop in the US now.
Many in the US is suffering, due to house values dropping etc, so LOCALLY there might be some better deals now, but all in all i dont really think there is a big difference.
But.......now to the cruel part!!!!! Bottom line is that if somebody is desperately waiting for "worse times" to get the deal they want, well......then they are going for a hobby that they actually cant afford!!!
If they are not able to do any work on the car, so what they are looking for is a nice driver, that will have a pricetag. Nobody gives them away, and if they need to sell, there will always be somebody that buys it, if it is on internet.
I think those days are over, there you could find an old lady that has a very old Dodge she think is worth 500 dollars,  stored in a dry garage since the husband died, and it turns out to be a Hemi Charger.
Unfinished projects from people that ran out of money and interest is easier to find IMO.

I just looked at 3 '68's yesterday.....for a VERY good price. I'm broke, but will most likey be getting all 3 next weekend, once I work out the details.....
Affordable projects are still out there, but you have to get away from the computer and do some foot work....

A couple of weeks ago I sold my '64 Belvedere on CarsOnline.com.   I've been watching the selling prices for collector cars drop for the last 6 months, and I decided to sell it while I still had a chance to get my appraised value for the car.  Fortunately, it sold in 3 days to a guy who was looking for my specific kind of car, and had the money to buy it.  I got lucky!   

I've been receiving the CarsOnline.com newsletter for the last couple of weeks and today's issue talked about collector car prices dropping 31% since January '08.   They monitor the selling prices of the most popular cars, not the oddball stuff.  Their data shows that Fords have dropped 39%, Mopars have dropped 33%, and Chevies have dropped 27% so far this year.   Personally, I feel that we'll continue to see car prices drop as gas prices remain high, food prices climb, etc.   Wages aren't going to rise to meet these increased costs, and people just won't have the money to meet the basic necessities of their families.  Just my 2 cents....Brian

To me, it would be reflective of how I feel about my own car.  Which is not for sale and worth to me no less than it was last year because of the hard times this year.  If someone wants it bad enough they need to make an impressive offer or in my garage it stays right where I want it.  Bottom line, I think the market is still strong unless someones having hard times and HAS to sell.

i have totally noticed a big change in the chargermarket as a whole. while affordable projects still hold their own, good driver quality cars have come down quite a bit, as well as hemi car asking prices, etc. sure there are plenty of R/T's on ebay fo r$59k asking price, but they aren't selling. i always take ebay as the real world value of a mopar car. not BJ and not the local paper.. ebay is a national audience for the middle class selling a vehicle. and chargers are way down. don't believe me? look up completed 68-70's for instance.. last time i looked, (i was bored) there were 90 ended.. 22 sold out of those 90, 3 were relisted.. making a total of 19/90.. that';s just over 20% selling. NOW is the time to buy.. if i wasn't about to build a house. i'd be snagging up soe cars that were 10k higher a year ago

Here's the way to look at it guys.  Every market is beneficial for someone.

The only people hurting right now are a) the people stupid enough to buy overpriced stuff at BJ or other venues, and b) people that needed to sell to get cash for a house, etc, and waited too long.  I have no pity for the A people, but feel bad for the B people!

That said, if you have a car and intend to keep it, it does not matter.  People will still want to restore cars, so nothing is going to hurt the parts market.  It may be harder to "flip" a car, but if you are not in that business, what does it matter?

Side benefits are with money being tight, you might see paint shops start charging more reasonable rates than they have in the past to get business.

The biggest benefit is for the people wanting to buy.  Now is the time, don't wait if you have the cash.

Personally, I think this market was WAY overinflated (I mean, come on, $100K and more for some Mopars?  Sorry, they ain't worth some people's 2-3 years of wages--at least in my opinion--and it would have eventually had the bottom fall out, gas prices or not.  Anyone remember the early 90s?  That's when I bought all my cars and saved tons of money.

In 1977 we moved out from Illinois to California.  As a kid in high school, I had already gotten into Mopars (a ride with one of my dad's friends in a 1969 Hemi Super Bee did me in) and I remember an orange Road Runner that we followed on the interstate for quite a stretch.

We stopped for lunch at a Denny's, and there in the parking lot was a Superbird.  It's wing was broken on one side and held together by a piece of metal and bolts.  It looked liked it had been painted with a brush.  It was for sale, $500.

That's why and how I bought my new Charger. My '69 is done, doesn't need anything major. And I am sure that I would've paid +5K more if it was 2005-2006. It's a chunk of money but I can't get this Charger to todays condition for that money. I am happy to finally own a complete, #'s matching, rebuild and restored big block Charger.

Could very well be that while prices drop in the United States, economies in other countries are doing well and that is where our cars will end up. Just like our old BSA and Triumph motor cycles are going.

Very well said, but I disagree that now is the time to buy. Give it a couple years (and a good recession) to get truly good deals.

It is always fun to look on Ebay at the 'sold' cars. It's mostly just people playing games, or trying to get money for the 'labour' they put into that car they bought to flip. Some of us caught on to that... I agree Ebay is a real world price, but just to add to that, an auction with NO RESERVE is real world price, because of friends/relative helping the bid along near the end. Man, I wish this hobby would just be a hobby again....
