Why would somebody spend somuch $ for a v10 when the 8's make more hp... ?

thanks

Why would someone spend any money on a 40 year old car.  Cause they want to and they like it.  Fairly simple.

G-man

I understand that...

I was more refering to, what benefit/advantage is there of sticking a v10 in charger over a 440 or Hemi ?

Is there any performance/driving etc etc advantage as to why you would do it, or is it simply to be different.

dodgecharger-fan

To be different for sure.

Then there's that "Wow" factor when you pop the hood for other people.

And then there's the, "Because I can" factor.

A couple of reasons.  First, it was CHEAPER.  Significantly - especially since I can do my own fab work.  Need to consider the whole drive train - how much does it cost for a decent 500HP engine build PLUS a modern manual tranny?  $10K if you are very careful.  Now add on at least another $2-$3K in accessories.   My total cost for the engine/tranny/accessories is $7K minus the stuff I sold off.  I'm into this v10 for about $4K not including my time.  Yes, you could do this with a modern hemi as well - but no 5/6 speed manual - so more money again.

Second, I now have a modern power plant, that is a package - tuned as a unit, efi, computer controls, modern accessories that I can easily obtain.  This engine will be well behaved and I won't hesitate to drive it anywhere.  That can be a challenge with a 500 HP engine.

Third, EVERYONE is sticking in a modern hemi.  Where is the fun in that?  :icon_smile_cool:

Plus the V-10's can be built to handle more power than the modern hemi's can.
Also the WOW factor as mentioned above.

Because some people just like to color outside the lines and take the road less traveled.  They're called cool where I come from.  GT = God.

Peace,

Think it is up to each one of us to decide how much or how little we want to put in our ride, without having to defend our doings to anyone.
Almost like asking why they bother to put the rear wing on the daytona, since the speed limit is 70 mph!!!
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

I think for the WOW factor. At shows 10 guys have chargers with V8's making big HP but more people will go WOW over a V10.

You talking smack on my 6.1 ?          I'll have about 5K into my swap total when all is said and done...     but I see where you're coming from...    If i didn't have that pesky 69 Road Runner that my 440 is going into - someone offered me $5000 for it...   I could have done this swap for FREE.   oh well...

A decade ago, the (Viper-sourced)V10 coversion started out as a flight-of-fancy that cost more than getting good power out of a V8.

But after a zillion Dodge Rams have been built with iron-block V10 drivetrains, the tables have really started to turn on the cost/benefit ratio of this swap.

GT

I agree - but the truck v10 is nothing like the viper - I would never use one of those... WAY to heavy!

I agree about the iron-block V10 being too heavy.

But I'm anal about engine weight; I actually wish I could run an all-alloy SB wedge motor.

G-man

K thanks. Was just wanting to simply know if there was an advantage to it (keep my options opened)

Personally I dun like the v10 sound, however if there is some HUGE advantage over an 8, the sound could be sacrificed, guess not.

Sure its cool, Id say stick a v12 in then. THey sound pretty good in lambos.

Thanks again for replies

GT- congrats

GT

Granted - the v10 (or v12) will never sound like a v8 - probably my only regret.
But, it's all in the exhaust sytem.  If done well, it will sound awesome, if done poorly - it can sound like a UPS truck.

I have heard of folks making custom headers with pipes crossing side to side from specific cylinders to give it a v8 like sound.  I wouldn't know where to start (and it would be a plumbing nightmare).  Has to do with firing order/etc. E-I-I-E-E, etc.  It would be a cool topic of discussion to lay out the exhaust pulses of a BB v8 vs a v10 to see the differences and which pipes to swap to get as close to the firing order as you can.

Anyone want to take a shot at that?

Oh, and the v12 idea  :slap:   :eek2: that crosses the boundry of not putting a mopar motor in a mopar.   :coolgleamA:
It would be interesting to know the dimensions of the v12... may or may not be longer than a v8 or v10.
