   My Grampa taught me how to fly RC planes 30 years ago. Since then I've managed to accumulate around 12 planes...Three trainer types & get this, I never crashed my first plane, I retired it after flying it for 3 years. Cool. Also I have a little piper cub, three different P51 Mustangs, three F/A Hornets, one F4U Corsair, and a Space scooter.
    Flying RC is fun, but for some folks, landing can be a problem. I once saw a guy plow his aircraft right into his other aircraft right in front of him. He broke one plane in half over his knee, then smashed the other plane in the tailgate of his station wagon. He was screaming something as he drove away kicking up rocks. I never saw him again. Maybe this hobby isn't for the timid.

Thats one hobby I would like to do one of these days! We used to piss off the flyers when I was a kid, shooting the rockets. We'd go to the field to shoot the rockets as they were flying around.

a friend of my father used to fly RC planes and they developed a system to attach roman candles underneath the wings and dog fight with other aircraft. It was one of the neatest things to watch!

  I'm still building a 62" span WW ll F4U Corsair. And last but not least, my very first RC plane. I flew it for 3-4 years & somehow for some reason, I never managed to crash it. After that I retired it with honors.

  If you're just starting out, get the computer RC simulator first, that way you can plow hundreds of planes into the ground without it costing anything. Also get something like my mini-Hornet because you can crash it 50 times, other RC planes can be crashed only once. The new foam planes are tough, but if you literally break it in half, you can super glue it back together with foam safe glue & fly it just a minute later. Awesome.

My wife got me the G4 simulator last Christmas. Its very addicting. Ive been looking for a nice used corona brushless heilicopter. i missed out on a nice one on ebay awhile back. They can take a beating from a rookie like me and are one of the easier ones to fly.

I have a Venom Night Ranger 3d heli, I bought it about 2 years ago and have only flown it about 5 times. Every time I fly it it breaks. I can hover and move fine, just can't land or turn. Now the gyro/esc is broken, the esc doesn't work.

  Ya Helos are real tough to fly, even the simulator copters aren't easy to fly.

Can i throw in a question here...  What is a good gas powered R/C car to get for playing around with?  I've always wanted one and now that my son is 3-1/2 maybe its time for a couple R/C cars for us to plaly with.

For a beginner I would recommend something electric like the E-Maxx or similar. It has decent power, but charging the two batteries is a PITA. The Savage is a great solid truck that is nearly unbreakable. I have had mine for many years and have spent less than $50 in repairs. I even cracked the engine block out of my own stupidity but got a nice used one for $5 and just needed to transfer the sleeve. I have jumped my Savage over 20ft high and even into a brick wall at 40mph all that I broke was an upright, which has been improved on the newer models.
For you, I would buy 2 RC18MT's they are great trucks and with an RPM Bumper it is unbreakable. They are relatively cheap and fun to upgrade. Both of you can get one and compete. Some upgrades you may want to do is get some better batteries such as IB one, IB is a company, and a good battery charger. Brushless motors run about $100 and can make them go almost 60mph.   That's cool that you still want a gas RC car, they're old school & really fast but, the hobby shop will probably talk you into an electric car since they mostly sell elec. RC's. Ever since the longer lasting lipo batteries came along, I'd say elec. RC's are more fun, mainly because there's no mess from the Nitro/glow fuel & elec. etc. Another thing is the gas RC's are pretty loud & the elec. RC's are quieter.

Bordin, did you ever have any experiences with the tiger drive starters? I have an older tmaxx that I upgraded to the bigger 3.3 motor and the easy start is pretty much worthless on it. I thought the tiger drive would be real slick but the one that was suppose to fit my truck is impossible to use any way you mount it unless you take the left rear wheel off anytime you start it  The brushless motor thing is looking better and better but I love the smell of the nitro

I have never used the tiger drive, but I assume it is similar to the rotostart that comes stock in almost every HPI nitro r/c. So I really don't know how it works but have a general idea. You could try posting on www.therczone.com or www.rcuniverse.com they are both great sites. I too love the  smell of nitro or else I would have converted to brushless long ago.

Is this a good buy?  I just went to google and typed in RC18MT.  This MT is a small little truck at 8" long, or at least it seems short to me.  But i'm a virgin in R/C stuff right now, its been about 20 years since i had the blue monster truck from Radio Shack.  After mowing lawns all summer long and saving every penny.

It is a great little truck about 8" long. Out of the box it will do about 25. You can get one for you and one for your son.
The upgrades I recommend are
-RPM front Bumper, the stock one is a POS and also the bulkhead, RPM stuff carries a lifetime warranty

I used to have a rc plane. Paid alot of money for it and the equipment that goes with it. After crashing 30 times in a row on the simulator at the hobby store; and then seeing three high dollar planes crash at the rc airport within one hour I was too afraid to fly it. I eventually loaded it up with a bunch of junk and sold it at a swap meet (for much less than I had in it).

This is the only pic I have of my Eagle 63, but it doesn't have the wing in the pic. I took a pic of the guns and happened to catch the plane in it. I have a pretty good air strip that I keep mowed up out in the back 40. 

I've thought about doing something like a hornet, but I'm not good enough to handle it at the high speeds they run.

Thanks. The CZ is a 222. The other one is a Mini 14 and it's a 223. Since that pic I've added a muzzle break and it looks pretty cool
