Original Valve Colors

After I took off the inch or so (slight embelishment) of gunk that made the 2 valve covers appear to be a black in color, they are actually an odd color that is between a light blue and light green. Like an emerald blue or maybe sea foam or something. Since then I have seen a few other pictures of MOPAR engines with the same color of valve colors and in some cases even the block. Was this a standard, original color for these parts? I'm fairly certain these are original parts and I know my dad didn't have them painted.

On a related note, what do guys think is the best for cleaning EXTREMELY dirty engine parts?

Turquoise!!! That was the color I was trying to think of. It is a '68 440. Was the block turquoise as well or just the valve colors? Anything else?

Seems like an odd color combo, that color engine with a PP1 Red in my case.

I use Purple Power cleaner. It seems to work pretty good for me.

I've heard oven cleaner works well but I have never tried it myself.

I sprayed on soapy water and sprayed with hose, or lots of dish soap water and a power washer, wear glasses or something,  tried block degreaser once but think it was too harsh on rubber, was wrong product.

Wow. Thanks for the pic. Wonder why they went with that color? Seems like an odd choice. What about the 69 and 70 440's? What color were they originally?

'67 was turquoise with chrome valve covers.  '68 all turquoise.  '69 to '71 was orange.  Don't know about other years.  Here's a link to an unrestored '68 Charger R/T:

Actually the low perf motors were blue a totally differant color from the turquise.
