The 8 1/4" can handle about 300-325hp.

There is a guy that comes to our local cruise in that drives a 77' Magnum, (I think), that has a lightly built 446"/Auto and runs a 78' 8 1/4 w/sure grip from a police car.  He's been beating the snotttt out of that car for 3 years that I know of with the same rear. He runs some old beat Hoosiers on the back and I think they are 8 or 9 inches wide..

That said, I would not go that route only because sooooooooo many better rear ends are still out there. An 8 3/4 is more stout and a Dana 60 is killer...

If you are sticking to the 318 and not going very crazy with it I would just work with the rear end you've got. Once you have the ways and means to get more crazy ask again....

I think that short of stroking your 318, the engine shouldn't put out enough power to explode the rear. An 8 1/4" is surviving fine behind my 400-4, but I am running Radial T/As and the second any power is made the wheels spin.
