while replacing the rotor & distributor cap, I noticed the inside of the distributor is pretty grungy.

does it makes sense to have my distributor rebuilt or to get a rebuilt distributor from Paddock for $130?  I have a pretty much original, numbers matching 72 SE with 440HP electronic ignition.  I want to keep the stock look so not really looking at new style distributors.

seeing black around the base of the spark plugs, lead to to think the spark wasn't strong enough, so I replaced the ignition wires, rotor (grungy as well) and cap

thanks for any advice!

My advice would be to pull it out and spray it down with brake cleaner. That should clean it fairly well, then lube the advance parts lightly with dielectric grease. Also replace the pick-up coil because: 1. they're cheap and 2. it looks like the wires have been chaffing.
Check your vacuum advance as well (or just relace it). Check to see if it holds vacuum by using a vacuum pump or the cheap way: connect it to another vehicles vacuum line while running, then pinch the line and see if stays in position or springs back.    :Twocents:
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.
