would you keep a 72 440 or a 67 383???

i have two complete drive trains right now but i am only keeping one of them. they are both rebuildable engines and trannies.  one was out of a 72 charger 440 and was the original engine to the car. the other was the original 383 out of a 67 charger. which one would you guys keep??

I've wondered if 383s might become more en vogue if gas got high enough. 

Those things make a very high amount of power in proportion to their displacement.  Even hot smallblocks generally can't rack up torque numbers like the 383 does at 3000-3500 rpm.

440's cost the same to build as 383's.. a 383 doesn't get enough better gas mileage to matter. it's a no brainer. you can't substitute cubic inches. same reason 318's still get overlooked for 340's and 360's.. close to the same gas mileage, same cost to build, more bang for the buck

me, the 440 being you are going to rebuild, get some good pistons to up the compression to do away with the low compression they had in that year.

  Don't get me all puffed up    I'd go w/ the 440 but of course trash the pistons. But don't count the 383 out, I have that certain kind of whacked out Mopar friend with a 12-1 comp. 383 w/ a nasty cam & it CAN really rev. That's the difference...The RPM's means his 383 motor can smoke alot of the 440's out there.

Unless you need the funds, why not keep both?

Just think of this...what if you come across a nice Charger (or Challenger or Cuda or whatver) that does not have a drivetrain, and you can get it for a great price?

Boom, there's your drivetrain, drop it in during a weekend and you have a nice, non-numbers matching but terrifically drivable mopar.
