i fouled the plug in my 383 by it running to rich i adjusted timing but still seems really rich but a little better if my 383 had points in it and i upgraded to elctronic should i be running a different plug than when it had points? if so whats a good plug and gap i hate to put new plugs in and foul them out again

RD

did you foul all of the plugs or just one...

all of them
car was way to rich when we broke it in think i got it about where its sduppose to be but still smells rich  havnt taken it out on the road yet so not sure how its gonna be under a load

RD

had you leaned it out on the fuel/air mixture screws on the carburetor yet?

i think so we turned them in all the way and backed them off 3 and 1/2 turns its an edelbrock 750

RD

that is still way rich... once you turn them in to the point where the engine is about to die, you turn it back in between 1/4 and 1/2 turn.. that is all you need.  you are dumping a lot of fuel down there methinks... is your exhaust shooting out black smoke?

cant really see and black smoke but exhaust tips do have carbon on them ... so if i turn them all in and back em out 3 turns thats to much? how many would ya think initially

y3chargerrt

I'd start with 2 turns out then tune with a vacuum gauge or tach.

onebadmopar

did that stil seems a bit rich i have a question tho i upgraded to elelctronic from points with the mp igintion kit it still has the same voltage regulator and does the igintion box (orange box) get grounded itself i have it attached to the firewall butthe slef tappers stripped out so i used a cple of plastic plugs from work but if  the box itself has to be grounded maybe im getting a weak spark ?

onebadmopar

friend suggested i have the vacum advance plugged into the wrong port on the front of the car  there is one on the right and one on the left ...... arnt they same or are thay different i have mine  plugged into the one on the drivers side and could that be making it run rich?

RD

vacuum advance should be plugged in on the passenger side

:brickwall: well thats one mistake ive made

Pull a plug and ground it out to the header or manifold and have someone crank the engine over. Look for the spark and specificly the color of that spark. Blue/white is good....dull orange/yellow means it's weak. The NGK XR5's are excellent plugs for that type of build. The carb sounds like it's rich at idle.....1-1.5 turns out max is all you sould need for the idle mixture setting. Set the base timing to 12* BTDC with the vac advance disconnected.  :Twocents:

here's an old-time trick for getting the right fuel mixture on any carb....get a piece of stiff, thin cardboard...cut it so you can slip it flat over the airhorn of the carb...warm up the engine and let it idle...start sliding the cardboard over the airhorn, cutting down the air going in...it should not affect the idle speed until mostly closed off...if , when you start sliding across the airhorn, the idle starts to pick up, the mixture is too lean...if the idle slows down, it is too rich...
