i have been looking at a 71 superbee, needs a total resto, but it is a numbers matching bench seat 383,pistol grip car.to afford to buy it and do a resto,i will have to sell the blue 72.i havent really decided yet,but if i was, what would be fair to ask?

i am a new car dealer,so my books and sources arent great for an older car value.
it is a 72 se,has a 68 440,pretty mild build,brand new 727 and convertor,has 2.94,but i have a 3.55 also.new vinyl top,paint was finished in march of 05,needs interior work(seats recovered,some small wiring stuff.)runs great,has about 7,000 on the engine.

the bad-has a dime size hole in the drivers floor board, and a quarter sized one below the drivers seat, the heater blowre is stuck on hi(after i swapped heater cores?)and the b and m shifter is getting worn, should replace it.

i added up all the reciepts i have, and they total about 6 grand, plus the 4 i paid for the car.and i cant pay my self for my time, but it would be a lot!i am going to try and get some pics tonight -andy

If I were you I would not sell the 72 se.  They just do not seem to be worth very much money.  I think you would be very dissapointed in what someone would give you for it.  I have a 72 se also that is very well optioned but it seems like a 71 318 car in the same condition is worth about 25 -50 % more than my 72 se.  Although I have to agree I like the 71's better because of the flush side marker lightsand I really hate the smaller rear quarter windows on my 72 se.  My 72 just has way to much history for me to ever get rid of it.  Back in the early 80's my dad would take me for rides in that car when I was a little kid and now it is pretty cool that my kid is the same age I was back then and now I can take hime for rides.  Sorry, didn't mean to get all mushy there.  Anyways it seems like the majority of 72 se chargers are in that $4,000- $9,000 price range .

i really havent decided what to do.i have 8 grand in a retirement account, and could borrow against it,but my wife would have stroke.i love my car,but have always wanted a bulge hood,4 speed car!i guess im just thinking out loud, plus i have the car insured for 15 grand, which is what the appraiser said was fair market value, keeping in mind everything thats been done to it.i myself dont see someone paying that much, but i wouldnt sell for less than 12

A rule of thumb I've heard is " Parts are worth half what you paid for them, and your labor is worth nothing when it's time to sell a car"

I'd look at this site for a month or two and track what is advertised, and what actually sells in that time period
www.collectorcartrader.com      [ it is the companion site for autotrader magazines for old cars ]
Keep in mind a lot of the higher priced cars you'll see on there have been advertised for Months with no sale.

Of course the more rush you are  in to buy the superbee, the less you'll have to accept for the SE....

I'm not in the market to buy , but $12K might be optimistic.[?]

I would say you could probably get 8-10k for it.

Just curious, how much is the 71 Bee?

Keep it Andy and make it what you want it to be. Heck, not that far off from the Bee.

If you do sell, well we can talk about the 440. ;)

So, swap in a 4-speed and keep your eyes peeled for a bulge hood. Painting a hood to match and swapping trannies on a car you already have makes more sense to me than starting over with an unknown entity.  For the kind of money you'll have to spend on the 'bee you could have a Keisler 5-speed and an air-grabber ;D

You'd probably be disappointed with what you could get for your '72 Andy, and you'd be further in the financial hole with the Bee, depending on what you'd have to give for it. The '72's just haven't caught up to the '71's, and I would think that it being a 4-speed matching numbers car, (and yours isn't), just further tilts the financial scales against you. I guess it ultimately depends on how low you'd be willing to let your '72 go and how bad you want the Bee.
