Same here.   And i like to think of it as "Smiles per gallon" not miles per gallon.....  :2thumbs:   :drive: :drive: :drive:

I forget the exact numbers but at the Charger Meet in Jefferson City a couple years back I used around 15 gallons in a little less than a hundred miles. That was mainly all city driving back and forth to the meet from the hotel. That figures out to around 6-7mpg and I never bothered to check it again since.

Mostly stock and 10-11 mph here.

myk

9 to 10?  Sounds about right, and that's with keeping the motor under 3K...

ITSA426

I get a consistent 10mpg with 3.54 gears.  If it's on the trailer behind the Rumblebee it gets 12 but then I don't have room for the hemi.

my73charger

Mine does real bad, but I have 410 gears.  Somewhere around 5 mpg (in the city) I would guess.

Joshua

When moving to Wa from Alaska, my Charger averaged 17mpg during the 3 day drive, packed full with luggage.....Stock 440/727/3.23.....doesn't get that now though....hahaha!

tricky lugnuts

Put a 440 in my Charger in January. Original, stock, '71 440 with electronic ignition; otherwise stock, standard bore.

Drive it close to 700 miles for a trip this winter. Got about 16-17 miles per gallon on the highway.

City mileage sucks -- probably about 10 or less.

It can get about as bad mileage as my foot wants it to!

Read in my factory service manual for '71 that a 440 sucks down 1/4 gallon of fuel every 10 minutes at idle.

Drove my 500 over to St. Louis last year for a show. 247 miles on 17.3 gallons of gas. That comes out to 14.27 miles to the gallon. That is a 440 AT with 4.10 gears. Was cruising at 60-62 mph all of the way over. Now on the way back home, was a different story. Drove back at around 70-75 mph and used 20.5 gallons of fuel. Which comes out to 12.04 mpg.

Mine does 13 mpg on the Autobahn (@75mph/3.23gears that is - it seems not to be designed for constant faster speeds, especially the tranny would overheat quickly I was told)
Worst I had was 8mpg.

btw: My '94 Audi V6 gives me 18mpg @ 135mph  :icon_smile_big:

autodynamics

i get around 20 on hwy....14-17 street

Gotta ask, does anyone here with a 440 REALLY worry about gas mileage????  :smilielol:

how did you cruise 75 with a 440 and 4:10's? when i had them in my 69 i hit 75 once and it was right at 4000. felt like it would rip the motor apart if i held it there for a long trip.. not to mention i only got 6-7 mpg with 4:10 gears in mine. even on the interstate
it was fresh too

I just changed my gears out over the winter so I'm not sure. :shruggy: I'm doing a trip down to oregon in a couple weeks so I'll do some calculations then to see.

The only thing it's good to know for is to calculate the expenses to go to a show that's not in the engine-warm-up-phase-radius I guess...

Otherwise I count the smg (smiles per gallon) mentioned above  :icon_smile_big:

When we drove down to tenn. I was getting around 18-20 mpg.  In town I have no idea.

Your right, it was humming along at around 3,900 rpm at 70 I think. It wasn't exactly the nicest thing to listen to humming in your ears for 3 1/2 hours, but it got me home right?

When these cars came out the speed limit on most US highways was 70 mph. So you shouldnt have any problems because og 75 mph.
