Why do poeple just crack open their hoods at shows?

i drives me crazy when i see a car with the hood open a few inches at shows. when i go close to look i've even had some owners get pissed at me for looking :shruggy: . what is the whole point in doing this? why not just leave it closed?

whitehatspecial

Rule of thumb at shows, not cruise nights, is open your hood and trunk if you want your car judged. Or open your hood at cruises if you want people to check it out, close it if your engine bay sucks.

Not sure what cracking the hood means but maybe:

They think the motor will cool off faster???

Their engine compartment mostly sucks but if you only see the top part, it looks good?

The hood doesn't close all the way?

I sometimes close the hood partially when there is an on coming storm to try and keep the rain out.  Otherwise, I usually keep the hood open at shows along with the trunk.

Maybe they have the V21 hood performance treatment and want people to focus on that.
yet need to have it cracked a little so the judges can take a quick scope at the motor for judging purposes.

This would be my guess. :shruggy:

I pop my hood in the garage after any cruise to let heat out and keep the hood paint cool.   :shruggy: Maybe that's the plan?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Bad hood springs? I plan on keeping mine closed, it looks pretty bad.

If you are at a judged show they usually ask you to leave the hood and trunk opened. They don't have to be fully raised but the judges need access. If you're hanging out by your car all day it doesn't matter but if you leave and they can't open them up you'll get 0 points for those sections. A lot of people leave the trunks popped just so they don't have to keep pulling out the keys do dig around in the cooler or looking for the detailer. I have no idea why some people do that with the hood if they aren't getting judged.

Wouldnt take much to clean that up and if you paint it black under there it wont look like a Chevy since the car is already black.   :P  Thats an easy fix, no need to hide it.  :)

You need more dirt and some leaves like mine:

For me, I rather see a car with the hood closed. Especially when it comes to taking pictures of the car. I personally don't get anything out of looking at a clean engine. They all look the same for the most part anyway. When I used to show my Nova and my Aspen R/T, I never opened the hood.

I prefer to keep mine half open.....    It lets people notice the 6 pack hood and keeps the overly inquisitive from getting all in my business.

As for photos... I'd prefer hood closed.    Sometimes people ask me to close the hood....  and other times some folks think it's their own business to close it themselves  :icon_smile_angry:

I'm thinking about drilling holes in the hood hinges to put some pins through to hold it at my preferred angle.   Wish I would have thought of that before I had them powdercoated.  :P

Then you will get guys trying to shut your hood and bending it in half.  :eek2:

I do it to let the heat escape.  Driving other people crazy is just a perk.

my73charger

Not ot get off the subject but, one time I returned to my car to find 3 guys inside of it.  I was at the Chiropractor.  They were told to take a hike. :flame:  Now I always lock it up.  I usually only open the hood if I am right there with it.

General_01

I usually open mine, but people would like to take pics of the General. When I left the car to walk around, I would close the hood. When I was around the car I would open the hood and close it if asked.

Opened partially never made a lot of sense to me either.   :shruggy:

I prefer seeing the cars closed, especially when taking pics, but I know if someone has a lot of time & money invested in their engine they want people to see it. Maybe the distance the hood is open is proportionate to how much time & money was spent on it.

My friend with the 2 Superbirds stays in his car since he's a quadriplegic. He likes to see the other people & the cars going by while he's there. Another friend of ours always opens his hood for him to show off the engine bay, especially on the six pak car that has the original engine. As soon as he walks away, my friend asks me to close the hood so he can see what the hell is going on.

BTW, that Coca Cola Charger looks great.

That Coca-Cola Charger looks neat. I like the filler cap. Nice touch. Wonder if he made it himself or paid a shop to do it?

(Actually, after I posted I remembered the rims. He probably had the shop make the cap.)

As much as I hate when people are condescending towards me, that's cool your buddy still is involved in the hobby.  Quads are all different, can he drive?  The first and foremost activity I wanted back was my ability to drive.  First thing we worked on.

Years ago I did the half hood open gig on one of my cars.  Why...it was too damn dirty.  Of course there's always a few others' with worse engine bays but I'm picky.  I've only did it a few times as nowadays it's a priority to have a nice engine bay.  If the wheels and tires are shining along with the engine bay, it takes focus off the rest of the car.  ;)

TripleBlackGator

I am diggin that Coke Charger. I hope somebody has more pictures of this car. If so, please post them. I would like to see a complete side shot, the built in trunk cooler and the engine bay.  I will be on the look out for that car at Carlisle and the Nationals. Hopefully it will be at one or both. Anyone have details about the car or the owner? :2thumbs:

I usually open mine about half way so people can see the engine compartment as well as the Air Grabber and hood treatment. I think it looks better than full open anyways.
Cracked open?? Don't understand that point.
