Rear U-Joint Question w/picture

This is the third Ujoint I have had in the rear of this car in 2 weeks.  Not only are the cup diameters different the width dimensions are also different on each cross (2 1/8" and 2 5/8"). So it fits like a glove now but....there is nothing to hold it in....it slips right on by the strap.  The NAPA guys have been thru the Precision catalog twice - this past time they gave me new straps but....they don't fit :brickwall:.   It looks perfect but the Ujoint will slide right thru the strap sides. Is the strap supposed to have a lip on the side or something?  Unlike the other cross side there are no "C" clips or "C" clip grooves.  Are the straps supoosed to clamp and hold the ujoint in place?

Frustrating at $27 a Ujoint to do trial and error :flame:

If there are no "C" clip grooves you have the wrong U-joint.

Bearing cups without grooves are intended to be retained by tabs in the bearing saddle or by retaining rings on the outside.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

just went through all this today, it was a headache for me also. the u joint for the rear is part number 2-3100dl at autozone. hope that helps

Thanks for the replies.
1968 Charger - did you use the non "C" shaped retainers somehow?  The last U Joint I got from NAPA was a Precision 447 and it looks exactly like the 2-3100dl from autozone with (2) "C" Clips and (2) End Clips.   I don't have a groove for the end clips in my strap.

As John K points out, I may be headed back to NAPA for my fourth U Joint.  Last time they couldn't find a UJoint in the Precision catalog with (4) "c" Clips with the different lengths and diameters.

Thanks again.
Dan

yes mine took the outside retainers on the driveshaft side, and the inside retainers on the rearend side
