QQ1 Blue? Help!

So I called the local paint supply shop (a PPG distributor) looking for some base/clear QQ1 (#13354) blue paint to redo my engine bay.  He tells me it does not exist.  QQ1 is only a lacquer color, and lacquer is no longer available in IL.  Any truth to this?  Is he just not looking hard enough?  It seems like if they have the code they should be able to mix it up in single stage or base/clear, right?  Eh, what do I know...

Then he says he can give me a DuPont single stage that is supposed to be an exact match...has any one out there used or seen this color? (code 4861)  How close is it to the PPG color?

The exterior of my car was painted B5 by the last owner,  and if all else fails I could just get some B5 for the enginge bay too.  I was hoping to eventually go back to the year-correct color, and figured I'd start by doing the e-bay in the right color... Am I out of luck?  Nothing ever goes smoothly with these projects, does it?  :-\

I live in Southern IL and painted a QQ1 Charger.  I was told that ppg did not produce that color nor did ICI, but a brand named Omni did.  Omni is not as good paint in my opinion but it is cheaper.  I still have the can I will try to get you some numbers.

Red, have you tried the PPG help line? I don't have the number anylonger but I think they can help. Get a Duopoint paint code for QQ1 and they should beable to come up with a Mixing Fomula to match it.

Your man behind the counter is just lazy or inexperanced. PPG makes the paint in Base/Clear. I have shot it in the past. The oraginal paint was not laquer. It was an enamal. Single stage. Du Pont dosent cover as well and if you don't put on enough it will not be the right color. Even then I'm not too sure that its the right shade in the first place.

My QQ1 Charger was painted twice, both times the base/clear paint came out more B5 Blue. I know
of one car in this area that is painted the correct color QQ1 and he will be painting my car when
he has time. He had to do a lot of home work and mix a few paints to make a correct QQ1 base
coat clear coat, yes he has been painting for 20yrs.

Thanks for the info guys.   I'll try the PPG line tomorrow and see what I can come up with.   The guy at the shop definitely told me that QQ1 wasn't even available, not that he didn't have the mix code.   I'll try to hunt down a few other shops too, see if someone else more knowledgeable can help me out.

Do you have any other pictures of that Road Runner 8Wheeler?   That looks darker than what I expected qq1 to be.   It seems to be about 1/2 way between B5 and B7...is that about what qq1 is? (I like it )   I think every "qq1" car I've ever seen was actually painted B5...

Here is the same car but with no sun, looks darker than in the sun, QQ1 has more metallic in it as well.

Now that you have it posted up here, I don't need to go home and luck at it.  I can look at it all day here at school, that way I don't miss her while I'm away :icon_smile_big:
