Fuel Delivery Problem. I Think.

Last week out for a cruise and the car up and died at a stop light, would not start and had to push it to a safe place.
Lifted the hood and noticed that there was no gas in the fuel filter, the car restarted after a few minutes and got home just fine.
So since then I have been thru the whole fuel system from the tank to the carb. What I have noticed is when the car is first stared
the filter will fill with fuel, after about ten minutes the filter is dry. The car won't quit it is getting just enough to idle. After some more
playing by letting it rev for a couple minutes that the filter will then fill with gas again, then it will go dry for a couple of minutes then refill.
It's a weird cycle to me. Another thing I noticed is when the filter is dry of fuel if you take the fuel line off at the carb there is alot of pressure,
almost like the gas is being stopped from flowing to the carb. Is this normal? I don't wanna get stranded again and have to push.

Thanks

How is the fuel Tank vented, Cap or remote line ?
Only wimps wear Bowties !

I thought of that as well. It is vented by a remote line. I even ran the car without the gas cap
on and got the same result.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem....could be a weak fuel pump or worn out pushrod. If it's a high milage engine the ful pump rod should be checked.....it should measure 3.25 in.

Have a look at the floats as well....could be sticking or set too low.

sounds like a fuel pump. Does your car have a fuel filter in the tank? Sticking floats?

Old School

I tried three different fuel pumps same result. Sticking floats it could be, but when this is happening I have
tapped around the carb with a hammer to see if anything was sticking no change. I did think about the push rod
but I can't seem to get one locally. I have never had one go bad before, so I don't think that is likely, possible but
not likely. The engine has 78,000 on it.
Is there something in the carb that would build pressure and keep fuel from even getting into the filter?
