Getting Lugs Off

Hi,
I have a 68 R/T that has been sitting for about 15 years. I tried to take the lug nuts off using a lug wrench with a break over bar. I still had some more power to put into it, but the lug wrench started to bend. I used some WD40 as well, but didnt help. Is it possible that there is rust inside on the threads? Would an air rachet gun work? What do I need to do to get these wheels off? Much appreciation for a response.

Thanks
JK

REMEMBER, if it hasn't been changed over the years, the left lug nuts has LEFT handed threads! they go the OPPOSITE way!

Very important! The guy that had my Charger before me went the air rachet way you are about to and I will tell you the lugs will need a circle wrench to get them off after that!

Hmmmm...not sure I understand about the left lug nuts response. Are you saying that the lugs on the passenger side wheels should be turned to the right to loosen them? Or are you saying that all the lugs need to go right to loosen them? Or something different all together?

The one I did try to get off was on the passenger side and I was going by the ole "Left loosey, righty tighty" saying.

Thanks

The drivers side has left hand lugs, yes, meaning that right is loose, left is tight. Passenger side has normal threads though so I don't suppose that's your problem.

Thats good to know for the future. Would have never guessed that. Thanks.

One of my friends suggested just breaking off the posts. That seems a little extreme. I was trying to get some tires on it to get it towed from my parent's house to my house.

I wouldn't trip about snapping the lugs off. They're easy to change out, and you'll want to anyways it sounds like.

If you're having problems with the right side, then I guess they are settled in nicely by time and moisture
Just got to keep trying with force,WD40 and maybe try an air rachet....

Hey, aren't you Americans suppose to be in bed now?  :nana:

Thanks for the speedy replies fellas.

This car has been sitting for about 15 years. I dont think anything was wrong with it, my dad just stopped driving it b/c of health issues. As you can imagine, it nows needs a lot of work. I dont know much at all about working on cars, yet. I suppose the first thing I want to do is get it up and running. What would you guys suggest are the things I need to do first? Is there a certain order of things to check/fix/replace? It is a bit overwhelming and not sure the best place to start.

Thanks

Good morning fellas!  :icon_smile_big:

I would start with checking the fluids(motor,tranny,brakes,power-steering,cooling,gas) and try to fire it up.
let us now if you got any problems, and post some pictures of the car!

For a rust bustin' penetrating oil WD40 is a very poor choice, there are better brands like Kroil or PB Blaster. Give them a try.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
