in 1972 could you have an SE rallye?

owner says his 72 charger is an SE rallye 4 speed. Just confirming, could you get a 72 se 4 speed with the rallye option? if so, what things from looking at it would show it was a true rallye car?

nakita7

No, no such thing. Rallye VIN's start with WH or WL, and SE's start with WP. If it's a true Rallye, it will have the code A57 on the broadcast sheet too. There is no way to tell from the VIN if it's a Rallye unless it has the engine code for a 340, 440-4 or 440-6, with the WH or WL prefix, as these engines were not built in regular Chargers. There were 440 SE's though (WP29U2). Plus they have different roof lines around the rear quarter window. In High School I had a black 72 SE that I added a bulge hood, Rallye doors and tailights to. Looked cool, but no such car was built.

TUFCAT

nakita7 is totally correct.  The answer is:  NO, Never, Not a chance!

....but for the record, (adding to nakita's response)  4-speed SE's were available in 1972 - with either a 400 Magnum or 440 Magnum.  340 Magnum was available on Rallye only - SE 340's did not exist... 4-speed or otherwise.

where can i find production #'s for 3rd gen chargers?

Like this one is a 72 SE 400ci 4 speed, I know of another 73 Rallye 400 4 speed, and then another 72 Charger Rallye 340 auto with A/C as well as a non-#'s matching 72 Rallye 440 4 speed car (but engine is gone).

Of those which had the fewest produced?

nakita7

I'm not a numbers guru, but off the top of my head, I'd say the 4 sp SE car. Anyone got stats out there?

mikesbbody

nakita and tuffcat are right i have only seen one 72 se 440 4 speed car i dont know the numbers, but id say pretty rare. it was for sale on ebay years ago havent seen it or any others since.

nakita7

That orange one is looking pretty good, I'd give that one some serious thought.

I agree im pretty sure i have seen that one for sale before (cant remember where) would i be right in saying there are more 400 4 speed 72's than there are 440's?

yea, the orange 4 speed SE (72) is a 400ci car, i wish it was 440.

TUFCAT

4 speed 1972 Charger SE numbers are:  400 Magnum - 126,  440 Magnum - 21.

oh wow, thanks, so it's 1 of 126. Original color was B5 blue, owner changed it to that orange/black. I wonder how that orange would look with a white top to match that interior. :scratchchin:

xs29l8b

i just dont get why the owner keeps saying is an SE with the Rallye package.

What did the rallye package consist of in 72?

or a bulge hood with the black out treatment with the black top? :scratchchin: too bad i suckz at photoshop.

nakita7

Rallye package was a bulge hood (or Ramcharger), louvered doors and 71 R/T tailights.

xs29l8b

thx, it has none of those so id say he is just misinformed.

Uh, yeah. Notice the rear quarter window is different? The 72 SE quarter window is one year/one model only. I like it personally. I think the 71-72 regular quarter windows looks stupid, but, what do you do? The 73-74 Rallye/regular open quarter window looks the best IMHO, and suites that body style best.  :Twocents:

Nakita, between your 72 318, 72 440, and 71 R/T, which do you enjoy most? which gets the most attention?

nakita7

To be honest, they are all projects, so they don't get a lot of 'attention', that's why I'm looking for a done car. Very tired of projects....

ACUDANUT

IMO opinion I love the looks of the the 71-72 Chargers the best (but the 2nd generation is the best).  The 72 SE window plug is UGLY.  I have a 72 SE and took out the plug because I hated it so much.  However, to each his own.  That's what makes this a fun hobby. :yesnod:

mikesbbody

I agree with acudanut about the se window plug (and i have a 72 se) however, like he said it can come out.
thanks for the numbers tuffcat!  :2thumbs: (400/440 72 se chargers)

TUFCAT

No problem, in fact my brother (also named Mike) owns and restored the F7 Green 4-speed SE that I linked to.  By proxy, I have a lot of interest (and know a bit about) the subject matter of 72 SE 4-speed cars!  :icon_smile_wink:

Sure has a runninhorn-esque tone to it along with several other posts.  :scratchchin:
