My first runs with the Hemi in review…

For those interested...here are the videos of the first runs with the Hemi car at Mopars @ Etown this past weekend. I would say all in all it was a success, however I'm still in the hunt for 11s. I've got a lot of work to do in sorting out the chassis still as well as shedding some bad habits. I need to work on my burnouts and I am still feathering the clutch out of the hole but getting better with reaction time every run. I'll post up the links with all the data from the runs. ANY help in reducing the 60 ft times would be appreciated. I'm stuck in the 1.90s and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.....

The set up is Caltracs with their mono leafs, Caltrac 90/10 shocks in the front, Rancho 9000 in the rear, Hoosier QTP 28x11.50 15s on an 8 inch rim.

The first run up was my second dial in run on Saturday. It just so happened that I lined up against another 69 with a 440. he ran a 14.0 against my 12.88. I was running 14 psi in the tires and number 5 setting on the shocks (rancho 9000). 2500 rpm at launch.

R/T   .393
60ft   2.025
330ft   5.563

1000   10.844
¼   12.888
MPH   110.62

Next was 1st round elimination...I broke out from my dial of 12.90. 3000 RPM at launch

R/T   .406
60ft   1.942
330ft   5.378
1/8   8.195
MPH   87.78
1000   10.620
¼   12.666
MPH   110.39

Next was my 2nd dial in for Sunday. I made a few changes to the setup....went to 10 psi in the tires and the highest setting on the shocks (rancho 9000). 3000 RPM at launch

R/T   .191
60ft   1.923
330ft   5.351
1/8   8.168
MPH   88.05
1000   10.579
¼   12.612
MPH   111.05

Last was 1st round eliminations as well as the last round due to rain. I launched at 4000 rpm and it was my best reaction time to date...12.61 dial in. This was my first win...EVER!!!! :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

R/T   .030
60ft   1.955
330ft   5.453
1/8   8.275
MPH   87.74
1000   10.699
¼   12.737
MPH   110.78

A couple of observations...First off I believe part of my problem in the 60 ft times is I'm not using a wide enough rim. I wasn't able to use all the tire that I had even at 10 psi (8 inch rim w/ 28x11.50 15s) I'm going to a 10 inch rim next. If anyone has any suggestions or see something I'm doing wrong please let me know.

You're gonna need a guru to dial in the carb(s) or injection and distributor curve to match the engine. Just a suggestion.

The last launch was the best...the car really felt good, too bad it spun....I'll get 11.50 out of it yet.....I think the heads are coming off for a little "work" next week.

Rick, it's not a bad idea....let me see how far I can stretch the budgit (like there is one lol)....The engine compartment doesn't look any different then a stock hemi compartment. If you still want pics I'll post some up, but nothing on the outside has changed very much...that's the way I wanted it. That may change a little but not by much.

Very nice car there, Hemidoug and I agree you need to get the 60ft. times down to near 1.50 . Got a friend with the same Caltracs-and-single spring setup on a Challenger and he too has problems getting the 60ft. times below 1.8 to 1.9.  Maybe it is the rims not being wide enough but, I think it is more likely the set up on the Caltracs and your launch technique. Also, lowering the psi in the tires down to 10-12 lbs. should be better and making the rear shocks a little softer to let the Caltracs do their work would seem to be the right thing to do! Keep working on the launch technique if you think the pre-load on the Caltracs is right.  Get those tires HOT on the burnout! From watching the videos, you aren't heating the tires up enough on the burnout!
Keep at it and you will find a way.  Your trap speed is very consistent and indicates it is running well. You should get another 1/2 second lower with the right launch but, with consistent 110 mph trap speeds, I doubt it is a 11 second car. Could be close, though and low 12's are definitely within reach.
What is the stall speed on your convertor? The 4000rpm launch looked better and that would be closer to the peak torque output on the motor which is where you want to be but, you still are overwhelming the suspension/tires. Are you "easing" it out of the hole (taking 1/2 second or so) or is the pedal to the metal when the light turns green? A better 60ft. time is the key to your success so, keep trying different things to get it down and kick some azz with that beautiful Charger!

Yea, I just need to get more seat time. BTW it's a stick car so the only converter is the nut behind the wheel (lol). I'll get these things to work yet. She'll be in the 11s by July, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve....

Well damn, I was hoping for low 12's.  It looked like you were getting squirrelly 1/8 mile or so.  That'll pucker you up.   The burnout on the run was pretty weak tho.
What about screwing the tires to the rims?  Is that torque spinning them too?  I haven't a clue. :shruggy:

I'm running a similar set up but with the 727 and am anxious to get to the track.  My fab guy did a loop just like yours and the Cal tracs jumps straight.

It's damn cool that you beat on a real Hemi car like you do.  :Twocents:

charge69

You know, I thought it was a stick car but, listening to it going down the track, I thought it sounded like a 727! :slap:   Reduce the preload on the Caltracs to let it squat a little more on the launch and keep practicing your clutch/throttle balancing on the launch.  You seem to be very consistent with the launch now as the 60ft. times are close. Try adjusting the Caltracs for a little less preload, get the tires hotter, and launch at 4000rpm or more!   Obviously, you can shift that gearbox pretty good! :yesnod:
