Body work is 99% complete, the driver side floor has been replaced and behind the passengers door has been pulled out and nicely finished. There are pictures for those who requested them and just to show the car is getting the body work it truly deserves. At this point, the paint guy tells me car should be able to be fitted in by the end of the year. Hopefully in time for Xmas and our summer break! Looking forward to the days in the shed assembling this long green machine. Dropped the O/D off at our transmission guy on Saturday. More progress.

Was looking in a tile store with the Mrs. recently and as we were leaving, spotted an Australian Charger sitting on top of a shipping container in the distance. Ventured over and found a wrecking yard (junk yard) filled to the brim with all sorts of makes and models of Aussie stuff from yesteryear. Walking around outside we met the owner who said we could wonder through as we pleased. I asked about the Charger and he said he had 6 of them. Walking down near the back Lucy called to me and said she had found the sixth one, wandering over not expecting much as the rest were very sad looking, I was surprised to find a sunfire yellow car placed on top of a Mitsubishi van. It had been picked to the bone; however was wearing original looking 6-Pack stickers and one thing that caught my attention was the fact that it had holes either side of the C-pillars where there would have once been duel filler caps to fill the optional 160L (42 Gallons) race tank. Asking about the car he could not tell me a great deal apart from where he had got it from. I came home, made a few phone calls and discovered that this was once in fact a 1972 E-49 Charger, probably the most desirable Aussie Mopar ever built and the fastest 6-cyl production car in the world - until Porsche out-did it in 1975. The car had been re-bodied around '00 into a later model charger, moving the inner guards, firewall tag - anything that could identify this car as what it truly was. The yard owner said he wanted $1500 for the car (it was tempting, but with nothing to prove what it is and not to mention I have more than enough on my plate atm). Sad to see something that once was truly an amazing piece of automotive history sitting there picked dry but it's been happening a long time and will happen again.... This is worthless without a picture I know, but my phone decided to spit the dummy and I lost the pictures and everything on it.

There was a Mopar car show on recently near where the Daytona lives and there were three Superbirds in attendance, much to my surprise. The petty blue and red one were clones and the orange one is a real 440-6 car. I was told in '04 that the petty blue one came out of a wrecking yard in New Mexico with a nosecone and wing with it. The red one I don't know anything about and the orange 440-6 car belongs to Noel Watson (who I believe some members on here may know) and was brought in from CA a few years ago.

Plenty more pics for those who need a fix.

Thankyou to Nascarxx29, who has put so many pieces together in the puzzle, which is this cars history. I'm sure I'm not the only one he's helped here... I am still looking for the history on this car pre - 1979 when it was purchased as a wreck by Ernie Palanches. I spoke to Ernie when I had bad flu a couple of years back and don't recall everything he said. If anyone here speaks to him, I'd appreciate it if you asked him if he has re-called anything since we last spoke.

Im always looking for actual dealer ads car historys for my collection etc.I did find a guy who distributed 69 daytonas to NJ dealers but no paperwork or pictures .Tim did you see that shipment remark on your daytona that went to Hatfield recon where it noted SALES SHOW.It might have been on display?? Other daytonas and etc etc remarks on the list have performance car show exhibition center.Which may make it stand out from where it was exposed to the public. That someone may remember .Maybe MCG should feature your car and its story of rebirth.I did see Earnie at a show a while back .I may remembered this incorrectly but I think he said owner of daytona purposely intended to hit a telephone pole head on.And flipped car.Another scenario I heard not from Earnie was car was driven in a field and a ditch caused it to flip. But the earlier nose picture shows a tree or telephone pole impression in my :Twocents:

Thankyou, I did see your post. I'm just mot sure where to go from here... I have thought about the car in MCG, but think that will wait and see if they're interested once it's finished? Ernie told me the car was intentionally run into a telephone pole!

Nascarxx29, Ernie couldn't recall where or the name of whom he purchased it from. Said he didn't get it out of Hatfield. It was over 30 years ago so I can't say I blame him. He had file on the car which included a business card he found in the back of a seat and that was about it. I'll forward the details of the card onto you if you like? Was for a lawyer? Nose cone went to scrap he said, as it was to far gone...

Once again, appreciate your efforts.

I would LOVE to have an Aussie E49 Charger!!!  Heck, I'd even take a regular Aussie Charger!  I have never seen one in person but I have always wanted one when I first saw pictures of one.  Driving on the right side would take a little getting use to!

Looks like the only part left on that charger is the rear bumper. i used to own a VJ charger back in the early 90s. i got a near-new rear bumper like that from the rubbish tip (free if i could extract it from the wreck) those days are long gone now that all cars are 'recycled'.
