TruckDriver

I have 2 job interviews today. Well, actually, I just got back from the first one.

The first one is driving a quad axle Peterbilt dump truck with a company that owns 6 total. The job is simply stock piling two of Milwaukee's ready mix plants. The pay is 30% of what the truck grosses (about $20. a hour), and pays to me twice a month. The job is 50 to 60 hours a week.
I will know by 6pm tonight if I got this job I was told. If I get it, I start Monday. :yesnod:

The interview this afternoon (in 3-1/2 hours) is for driving a single axle straight truck making deliveries for a small outfit that hires handicapped people, and they make small things like batteries and stuff. I would be only working about 40 hours a week making $8. or $9. a hour, and pays every two weeks. :P

Pros and cons;
The first job is a 45 minute one way trip. And after my trip there today, I can see my pickup will need a full tank of gas every 2 days (about $180. or so a week).  :image_294343:

The other job pays way less, but is only 25 minutes one way. And my truck would only need a tank of gas every 3 days (about a $120 or so a week, or about half the paycheck). ::)

My only dilemma is this.....
I don't have enough gas money anymore to get to a job, til I would get my first check from either place. I have a half tank of gas and $65. to my name right now. :-\
So obviously, I'm going to need money which I don't want to barrow. Thus, I don't know which job to take as I will need more money if I take the higher paying job, which is the one I really want. The other job pays so little, it will only let me get by barely, but that is it.

So, I need a job badly, I might have one by later today, but I don't have enough money for gas til the first paycheck. :brickwall:

Take the higher paying job and sell your truck and get a commuter car like the rest of us...?  Or move to where your higher paying job is, thats what i'm doing in two weeks.  When you are driving 45 minutes to work 10 hour days, thats half your day spent for work right there.  I'd suggest moving to the town where the job is and even walk to work if you can get close enough.  :yesnod:

Yea, or keep the truck and buy a $500 commuter car like an older Accord or Camry. If someday it falls apart or grenades and the repair bill is more than $500 just take it to the scrap yard and buy another $500 commuter. :2thumbs: An extra $10 or more per hour is worth the extra 40-minutes a day IMO.

 I just got another interview offer for a job driving semi in state for $15.85 a hour, overtime after 8 hours. The place has been around for like 60 years, and is a local LTL truck service (West Bend Transit) with about 30 trucks. They are also in the Teamsters Union. I'm really thinking about this place. I always heard good things about them.

I would have to get a Hazmat endorsement on my CDL, and have my finger prints taken though. Which would cost me more upfront money :P

Also, I canceled cheap $8-9 hourly pay job interview, and I am going to this one at 2pm. So I gotta go like now. Wish me luck  :icon_smile_big:

What is wrong with the Dak that it uses so much gas? I spend about 40 minutes getting to work in my 91 Cherokee and I can drive a week and a half on a $60.00 tankful, if I keep my foot out of it.

The Cherokee gets way better gas mileage. I'm assuming his Dakota has the 5.2L V8, probably 11-12mpg on a good day. My Cherokee can get 20mpg if I'm nice to it. The difference in mileage adds up.

Congrats on the job  !

It's running great. Ever since I've owned it, I've gotten 14mpg consistantly. Doesn't matter if I'm pounding around or taking it easy :shruggy:

And, yup, I got the 230hp 318 (5.2L). By the end of the year, it will be making about 320hp :D

The job is 45 minutes to the south of me in Sussex right on hwy164. Yes, I love the town I live in. I like small towns. And actually, the friends who know the owner of the company I'll be working for, and helped get me the job, also have a early '90s Pontiac Sunbird 2 door that they are going to sell me cheap, that has a 4 banger in it.

My old roommates were telling me about the water tower in sussex one day.  Some painters were hired to repaint the town name on the water tower and they decided to paint it from right to left instead of left to right.  Wouldnt you know it, they only got 3 letters done by the end of the first day (Friday)?  Over the weekend the towns people complained enough that the painters were out there on Sunday to finish the job.. HAHAHA  :hah:

Justify it however you want to...that money goes straight to Japan. Those workers are paid considerably less than a UAW worker, and have less benefits and are treated poorly. My father-in-law quit his job in Pa. to take a job at the San Antonio truck plant (Toyota). A forklift driver ran over his foot and they fired him (my father-in-law) because for him to rehab the foot, it would take longer than they wanted, so they canned him. Nice, huh? The guy uprooted his family for the promise of a better life, and the heartless Japan-based company fired him. Don't believe for a second that his is an isolated case. It happens at all these plants, most notably Toyota's plants. Remember Pearl Harbor. Never Forget. Remember all the Japs that shot at our boys (our fathers and grandfathers). If an Iraqi, Iranian, or Saudi car company sprouts up in Bumbledick, Tennessee, and employs locals, should we go out and buy one of their cars? Think we might hold a little grudge? How soon, as Americans, we forget. Korean War Veterans driving Kias and Hyundais. WWII Veterans driving Nissans and BMWs. Sorry, it makes no sense to me. I build it here. I spend it here. I buy what I build. I think what's going on in this country is sickening. It's why I never set foot in a Wal-Mart. I look for the Union label. I do whatever I can to buy American-made products from American-based companies. They ARE out there. You just have to be willing to look for them and patronize them. Rent, or I will personally send you a copy of, "Wal-Mart: The High Price of Low Cost." Most Americans simply don't care. They don't ask WHY it is that they don't have, or can't find, a good-paying job. We simply don't take care of our own; we have greedy corporate-minded profiteers selling us out each and every minute of every day, overseeing their company that used to be in YOUR town, which is now in China, from their laptops in the backs of their Lexuses while being shuttled to Country Clubs from their mansions. But, hey, you just bought a DVD player for $29. You win. I'm sorry if my free speech offends you or anyone else; truly, I am. But, that's just me. Truth sometimes hurts. All I know is that there are NO '66 or '68 Chargers around today that were built in Japan or Korea. Have a Nice Day.  :eek2:

....and, for the record, I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with a Tacoma. I'd get a Dakota or a Ram. But, again, as a Moparite for life, that's just me.

How about a late model Omnirizon? Neon? Shadow? Spirit? Mopar 4-bangers are out there to be had; screw the Japs. My dad has a '99 5-Speed, 4-cyl. Dakota and gets 27 mpg just putting around town. Not trying to offend, just don't understand how a Moparite could EVER recommend a Jap car.  :shruggy:

By the way, congrats on the job. Great that it's an AFL-CIO job. Work Union, Live Better. American by birth. Union by choice.

I went out and bought my 2006 Toyota Tacoma brand new.
Whats wrong with Japanese cars/trucks BUILT BY AMERICANS IN AMERICA?
Last I checked the Big 3 weren't building a lot of their products in the US.
You wanna brand bash we can do this through pm's, email, or in person.
I can't stand this sh*t in a community where we try to help each other!

If you take all the cars currently in Nascar (Avenger, Impala, Fusion, and Camry) the Toyota is the only one actaully built in the US :rotz: .

WRONG. The Dodge Avenger is built alongside the Chrysler Sebring in Sterling Heights, Michigan. FYI.

Oh, and good luck on the new job, Pete!! Work Union, Live Better.  :2thumbs:

Not that it matters anymore with the way this post went, ::)

I love the job. And the small picture (off my cell phone) is the truck I'm driving. I forgot my digital camera this morning at 3:30am :P

It's a dark metallic red '93 Peterbilt, with a Big Cam 350 Cummings and a 8spd. It has been turned up all the way, and will run 90

Wow...pretty clever. Just like that "r" at the end of your name. Genius. I woulda never guessed who u were talking about. Actually, I'm quite informed. Apparently, you Asian-loving Union haters are the ignorant ones. Just remember who and what built your Chargers. Dues-paying autoworkers and UAW labor.

I was just trying originally to congratulate my man Pete on getting a Teamsters Union job.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)
