Bought myself a new voltage regulator, since the old one didnt work, the lights get really bright at high rpms.
Bought a new that would fit 61-69 mopar, but it looks "older" than the old one.  :scratchchin:
Installed it, and it doesnt work perfectly.... it goes up to 14 volts when i hit the gas and stops, and the lights starts to "blink".

Any guesses on what's wrong? figuring something with the wiring, but unwrapping all that electrical tape makes me cringe...
I have an ECU, and one wire is hooked to the left side of the ballast resistor, if that says anything to anyone...

your old one ..is a electronic  up date on the old mechanical  style ....  & the one you just bought  ..is a exact reproduction on the original ..mechanical type .... were never that good when  new .   year one sells the old style with modern electronics .. like you old one  :yesnod:   ...need  a electronic  regulator ..with a ECU ..normally a 70 & up electronic regulator is used ......

Hemidog

do i need to do some rewiring?

myk

You're probably still running the single field 'alt, so you'll have to rewire a little.  Just to be sure, look at the back of your 'alt and see how many wires are attached to the back of it.  2 wires means a single field, 3 wires means dual field.  Read up on this thread: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,22649.30.html

If you wanna' avoid hacking into the wires just get another "old style" regulator that has electronic innards like the regulator you tried to replace.  Trust me though, the rewiring job can hardly be called that, it's so easy and your car will be better off...

tan top

not sure how yours is wired at the moment ..but  with  the ECU & later type electronic  volatage regulator ..you need a duel field alternator  also .. & a couple of extra wires.... will look for a wiring diagram for this set up ... thats the only way i know ...

Hemidog

thanks, the wiring diagrams in that thread explained everything.
looks like I'm buying another regulator!

Hemidog

another question...
do you think the connector is included with the regulator? or is there another way to get it?

tan top

nope do not include connector ............... yearone sells just that part i think ...   i know they sell the complete coneveted harness   have seen them for sale somewhere though !! :scratchchin:  ....  ... ..or go to your local wrecking yard    any  70s  mopar  car / pick up   would have it  ....

Nah man, just order the connector from a local NAPA, part #MPEVR38SB.  My local NAPA had it in stock even...

Chatt69chgr

I plugged that NAPA part number into the NAPA search feature and all it brought up was the regulator.  Not the plug.  Couldn't find the plug.

myk

Oh oops!  The number is this: #ECHVRC38  It's on page 3 of the electrical search for NAPAONLINE on the very bottom...

Hemidog

yeah, I found it, but I cant buy from them, as I am from overseas... bummer..
didnt find it in the yearone catalog...

myk

NAPA doesn't sell to overseas locations?  Surely there're some other parts stores that can order that for you?
