don't really matter if you dont have fender tag, at least as far as dmv is concerned. VIN plate that is a whole other matter, no way i would buy one w/o that unless its just a parts car

yeah, well, kinda too late for that.  already bought it, and obviously stupidly, invested quite a bit in it now.  I live in NY.  what should I do?

Check your state laws. Like I said, most states can issue you a state issue vin number.
