Is this bad? And if it is bad how bad is it and can it be repaired?

I finally got around to pulling most of my original 383 apart and I saw this problem before but didn't feel like asking about it until now. As you can see from my crappy, out-of-focus picture part of the cast ear for the lower motor mount is busted off. It didn't bother the previous owner I guess because there's enough of the hole left to make it usable. Is it a concern? Can it typically be fixed and fixed for a reasonable amount of money?

I threw in a couple of pics of the car and the tops of the left side cylinders and pistons for fun. Look at the pretty carbon. :P

I like the look (of the car, that is :2thumbs:)  As far as the broken ear it looks like it has been that way for a long time, so no action may be required. Look at the other ears very closely to see if they have any issues. And you can always repair the ear by fabricating the missing section and then brazing (see http://www.aluminumrepair.com/hts528.asp) them together. Some machining required. As your car is only a 383 2-barrel, it should be fine.  :icon_smile_wink:

More pictures, please. :drool5:

I'm not sure, but I love this stuff you posted at the bottom

"Guns kill people? Right. And pencils misspell, cars drive drunk and spoons cause obesity.

What sort of mental illness causes some people think it's ok for babies to die but not ok for murderers to die?"

Good points. :yesnod:
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Your car looks great Bull!

As far as the mounts go, I think Ron (Firefighter3931) posted something on how to fix them.

Curtis, it's possible to repair it but i wouldn't bother.....just add a torque strap (driver side) to keep the engine in place and you'll be fine.  :2thumbs:

This is from 440source.com    http://www.440source.com/blockinfo.htm

Mine is broken on my '72 block but hasn't caused any problems.

The thickness of the mounting lugs or "ears" was increased starting in 1975.

One fairly common problem that big blocks are plagued with is breaking off of the somewhat fragile "ears" or "lugs" on the side of the block that the motor mount support brackets bolt to.

(Typical broken motor mount ear- common)

The engineers at Chrysler must have realized this, because starting in the 1975 model year (along with some other changes listed below) the thickness of these lugs was increased by about .200". This was done with both 400's and 440's.

Early (pre 75) block mounting ears on the left. Later (76-79) block mounting ears on the right. The difference is obvious. We rarely see the later blocks with cracked ears. Yet another reason to use late model blocks.

If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.
