i sold off my 69 charger to my local friend who owns a body shop..i found a nice 68 charger RT here locally which is complete and moves under its own power...question i have is should i install 69 or 70 tail lights?...im not a fan of the round taillights...i know a repaint is in order to hemi orange and would have my friend do the taillight surgery at that time....your thoughts

personally...don't do it.  These cars are hard enough to find without people going and changing them up.  If you want a 69 or 70 then find one of thise instead....or get used to the circle taillights...I like them and think they are MEAN!

I personally wouldn't, I'd just hold out and find another 69 or a 70.  But to each his own, it's your car.

Don't do it. If you don't like the round tail lights, don't buy a '68.

How can you not love that :shruggy: ?

they aren't THAT rare.. hold out and find a 69 or 70. personally i am a fan of "it's your car do it how you want", but in the case of R/T's, i try to leave well enough alone. they deserve to not be hacked on. just my  :Twocents:

Are you changing the taillights because you really want a '68 with the later taillights, or because you really want a '69?

If you really want a '68 with the '69 lights, then convert this car.
If you really just want the other year, then buy that.

I wouldn't do it to a car that probably has the integrity to be restored to original like an RT.

What can I say, I wanted a 69 and those big bar tail lights and I ended up with a 68.  Now I love both styles.  I wouldn't cut or modify a 1968 just to get the tailights!  And if you ever want to sell the car, that might really impact the price a bit.

Keep the round lights...... :yesnod:

Good post, but I dont think many will agree to this comment being good :poke:

I myself want a 1968 Charger with a 1970 Charger rear tail panel.

I dont believe somebody can actually say "if u want 69 rear get a 69, if u want 70 rear get 70 rear" etc.

Why?

Simply because they dont have the front you want, and give off an entirely different feel to the car.

I like the bad ass look of the 68 front. Clean and mean. Like a big black hole ready to eat you up for lunch. It screams "Dont mess with me" look.

However, I have grown to like the 68 rear tail lights but they dont scream bad ass. To me the 1970 Charger rear tailights scream bad ass car (sinister, mean, evil, whatever u wanna call it).

Having said that, to have the whole car look that way, I would need a 68 front and 70 rear so that both front and back look mean. That also then means paint scheme choice. If your gonna paint it orange, or a bright colour, it defeats the whole purpose of mean. Then theres no point modifying the rear, however if you go dark or Black preferably, then it does it justice. Mean front, mean rear, black car... you got the idea.

You also need to decide what marker lights u like better. If u prefer the rectangle ones, then, get a 69 and just change the grill to 68.

I myself like the clean circle marker lights, so my best option is 68 charger with a 70 rear end.

So cut it up and do it to get the look you desire.

I dont believe it will effect the value of the car. Someone will see it and say it looks hot and offer you a good $. Seen it happen many times.

Go on you tube, have a look at that petrol charger that was on moparmusclemagazine. The guy customized it completelly, suspension 18-20" rims etc etc, Black 1970 Charger with 68 Rear tailights. 472 Hemi etc.

BUT

This charger being a 68 R/T.... then do not change anything. It should stay what it is. No fancy paint jobs, no fancy wheels, no fancy exhausts, no fancy suspension, no fancy motor and definately no cutting up.

R/T should be the way it was in 1968. Match the Vin/Chasis number and leave it as is. If you want a car of your own choice. Buy the cheapest non R/T Charger and do what you want to it.

Modify a R/T... well I got no words.

The horizontal tail lights on the '69 & '70 are nicer to me, too. I have a '68 now, but I never thought the tail lights looked like they belonged on that car. It looked like more of an afterthought by the designers since the rear panel is so empty. I went as far as buying a '69 tail panel to make the swap, but never did. The problem I have is that the tail is in mint condition & I can't bring myself to hack out a good part. If it were rusted or damaged, the swap would be a no brainer & done already.

I also don't know if I'd change something that couldn't be simply unbolted & switched back on a rarer or more desirable model like the R/T. I'm all for customizing your own ride, but the reality is, if you were ever forced into selling your car, getting the best resale is still important.

R/T or not, Leave it alone. If you like 70 tail lights, then just buy a 69 and BOLT in a 68 grill. Then that way it is removable with out ( butchering ) the car. If you put in a different tail panel then the integrity of the car is ruined permanantly becuase it was welded and hogged up just to be done..Kills the value of the car even if you plan on never selling it,  Not a very good idea.  :slap:  :Twocents:

Have you really looked at the detail on the '68 lights?  I read they were inspired by jet exhausts.  In an old Car & Driver or Motor Trend I have from '67 says the new '68 Charger was inspired by the Corvette.  Funny reading how they talk about head room and luggage space.  How could anyone think that this:

looks anything like this turd?

Hmmm......you sold your '69 to a buddy and found a '68....and now wanna put a '69 tailpanel on it???
Why'd ya sell the '69 in the first place if that's what you like???

That's what I was thinking. The boy's a couple slices short of a full pizza. :image_294343:
I'm not a big fan of the '68 taillights either, but I sure wouldn't go hack up one to change them...unless that rear panel was about ready to fall out on it's own from rust, then maybe.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I bought a '68 because the tail and marker lights are round. If you want both then buy both. Leave it alone and go buy a Vega if you don't like the way Chrysler designed the Charger.

Hey Bull, imagine how joyous you'd be if a round car like the VW Beetle had round tail lights & side markers?   :nana:

Welp, I guess you got an opinion from this thread. Maybe not what you wanted to hear.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do.
