I have a 509.mp, cam. 2,800 stall, with a 440. 355 gears. I am changing cams to a edelbrock7194 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D7194&autoview=sku  Im looking for good take off power while not idleing me out of the seat. Its like a harley right now. Want it smoother but dont want to change the tourgue converter
Do you think this is the right move?. I have a rpm preformer intake 750 demon carb.
Thanks

that cam is bigger than the one you have... it will be about the same...

go for a mopar purple 274 cam, or Ron can suggest the engle brand (dont know them that well)... that should do you fine.  and dont worry about the converter.. it will live and perform fine with that.

Like RD says (correctly) the Edelbrock cam you're looking at has as much or more seat to seat timing as the MP 292.....which means it will idle and behave almost identically.  :eek2:

With the 3.55's and 2800 stall you want something more modest and with descent street manners. A couple of choices to look at are the Engle K56 or the 268 VooDoo cam. Either will drop right in without swapping valvesprings, rockers etc....and will be a huge improvement in bottom end power.  :2thumbs:

The 60303 VooDoo would be a nice choice :

The K56HYD Engle would also work :

You could allways buy a new timing chain set.  ;)

OR

Order up the K56 Engle stick which has a single bolt upper gear.  :yesnod:

There won't be much if any difference between these cams....if your timing chain is in good shape (no slack) and you feel comfortable re-using it then order the Engle cam.  :Twocents:

will your springs handle the lift?  not sure what they are rated for as far as spring pressure, but the .520 is .011 higher than you .509 cam right now kapeche?

I called, and Chris at engles said the web site is a misprint and that its not a 520 but a 513
Adam

RD

merciful minerva batman!!!!  IMO, its okay to say such stuff if you are going a tad smaller, but never bigger.  Your springs may be spec'd out to go to a specific spring load pressure without the worry of coil bind, but if you dont know what you got, then how can the yahoo make such a suggestion... wowsers.. pm Ron about this, he is more of a guru regarding spring pressures, loads, unsprung weight blah blah blah blah and see what he says.. it may be okay, but Ron would know.
