while im waiting on the fan question im installing the driveshaft the shaft wont slide into the transmission looking into  the spline i see the drive shaft has a keyway  but i dont see one on the trnsmission spline .. what am i doing wrong?

Ghoste

Hate to tell you, but you may have to get a different slip yoke.  Unless it already came off of the same trans and you know it fits you may as well get prepared for the fact that there seems to be some out there with a slightly different pitch on the teeth.

onebadmopar

it didint come off this car it came off a 4speed charger i was told there the same

Ghoste

There are differences in some.  I don't know why I just know that I've run into it before.  As an example, I have a 727 in the shed and the slip yoke off of it will absolutely NOT go on the 727 that's in the car.  I've had to order from an aftermarket source in the past to make things work.

onebadmopar

weird thing is it will star to go on then stops i looked down the slip yoke its a little rusty so as we speak i have it soaking in pb blaster

Ghoste

That's what I found too, it goes in part way and stops solid.

onebadmopar

im wondering if that key slot has to line up with something in side the spline were i cant see it im gonna get back under it in a few and go spline by spline  and hope for the best'

onebadmopar

good news and bad news i went spline by spline and it finally slid in to the transmission my suspicion was right there must be a key way inside the spline on the transmission bad news is i landed it all the way into the transmission and the drive shaft is to long :brickwall: anyone know the correct length of a b doy drive shaft? this drive shaft appear to be about 1 maybe 2 inches to long

Ghoste

That's good news, the money saved on a new yoke can go for a porper length driveshaft.  It needs to be just over 52 inches in a 2nd gen with a 727.

onebadmopar

are we measuring yoke to yoke or just the shaft itself i measured from the counter weight near the front yoke back to  the end of the shaft comes out to be 521/2 inches this isnt uncliding the rear yoke or the slip yoke thats just the length of the shaft itself im baffled i was told this came out of a charger with a 4 speed

Ghoste

Measure from the center of one driveshaft yoke to the other.  A four speed shaft should be the same unless it came out of a Dana 60 equipped car and then it will be SHORTER.  If it was a 904 trans it would be about 4 inches longer.

onebadmopar

:brickwall: well it certainly isnt shorter  im betting it came out of a 904  and not a standard .. well i guess i,ll have to take it to my local drive shaft shop and hope it isnt to big of a hit to  the wallet to get it cut donw to proper length

terrible one

Yep, 52.07"  :2thumbs:

i had the drive shaft retubed got it back today and installed  it seems to fit but im wondering now how much of the front slip yoke should be visable.. should it be up tight to the transmission? mines not i can see about 3 inches of the slip yoke

Ghoste

Unhook it from the back and see if you can slide it in all the way and then pull it out about one inch.  At that point it should be close to the point where you can reattach it at the back.

onebadmopar

i did slide it all the way in then backed it out and rested it in the rear yoke i was just wondering how much of the slip yoke shaft i should be able to see

Ghoste

If you have an inch free play and a 52 inch driveshaft you're okay.

onebadmopar

i can visibly see 2 inches of the slip yoke so im going for it  i gave the drive shaft shop the measurement right out of the resto book so im sure they did ok  originally he was just going to cut it down but the way mine tapered at each end he said he couldnt pkus it had a dimple in the tube he said would cause vibration so 142 bucks new rear yoke and tube
