Off the wall Sound System Idea - Maybe?

Hi,
I have a 68 Charger R/T that I am resto-ing. It has the original radio and all. It isn't hooked back up and functional yet, but will be.  I want to keep it in, so that everything is original and authentic looking, just like it was when my father drove it. However, I love music and love good sound systems. With that said, I was wondering if anyone has added after market systems to their authentic interiors, but have them installed in out of sight places. I was thinking I could install a tuner in the glove compartment or maybe even the console. Speakers would be a little harder to mask, but I could replace the original speakers and keep the same grills so it would look the same and then put some woofers in the trunk. Has anybody else done this sort of thing or seen others that have? Any other cool ideas to get this done?

Thanks Everyone!!!!

I'm planning the same thing on mine. I was thinking in the console too since Ill have a couple other controls that need to be hidden  :D
The glove box is a bit of a reach, especially if your driving and the unit doesn't have a remote. The only other place that might be customized to work is behind the ashtray.
I'm not a smoker so I don't need it. Personally, I was thinking of just keeping the face plate of the ashtray and mounting something like this

behind it.
Ideally Id have the finger-unlock thing slide out the tray instead of the flap door but Ill see how much of a pain that would be to do first.
Let us know what you go with, I'm gathering ideas for mine...even though it has yet to be put back together lol

Here is  a thread about it. Kelly, (70charginglizard), did a terrific job on his speaker installation. His is the best job I have ever seen on a Charger.

I did that to my door panels.

I also put 2 Kicker 10" Solo baric's in the trunk directly behind the seat.

The 2 Amps are also behind the seat.

The power stuff and Cap in under the rear seat.

The kickers are in undersize boxes. It doesnt have the ass that a huge box
would have. But its a decent trade off of great sound vs look.

I installed the Secret Audio system in my '68 Charger with the 10 CD changer mounted in the trunk.  My receiver is located under the center console below the dash board. All that can be seen of the new stereo is a small LED display mounted under the dashboard below the ash tray.  I pulled the old AM speaker out of the dash board, removed the speaker from the frame and had two 4" stereo speakers mounted to the frame, then I installed two 9" speakers under the rear window package tray.  I'm pleased with the results and I was able to leave the original (non-working) AM radio in the dash board.

You should be able to find this system at your local auto stereo dealer/installer.  I think I paid around $600.00 for everything, including installation of the stereo and CD changer (I installed the speakers myself).

There's some threads to give you some ideas.

Seems the glovebox might be a good place to hide it.
Also I believe you can send your original radio out and have it modernized.  Don't know where though but I remember reading that on here some time ago.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
