I have a 73 dodge charger with a bad 904 transmission.. is there any 318 transmissions out there in newer years i can make work.. :icon_smile_blackeye:

The short answer is yes, any smallblock transmission will work.  The long answer is that when you get into the newer computer controlled overdrives or lockup converters and such, your work becomes a little more involved.

Check out the following article.  The A518 might be interesting since it's got overdrive.

Any of the OD transmission require major floor surgery, if you just want an updated 904 look for a non-lockup 999 from the mid/late seventies.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

anything from 66-78, but in 78, some had lock up converters.

you can even mate a newer OD trans to one, but you will need an adapter kit, as well as what John stated above along with modifying the trans crossmember.

be careful, there are both SB and BB 727's on the market, you can tell the difference by the bellhousing bolt pattern.  the top two holes on a SB 727 are further apart than a BB 727's by about 1 1/4" or so.

I heard there is a difference in 727 transmissions that come out in a performance car like the Charger and one that comes out in a car like the Newport.I heard that the Charger one is stronger.?Is this true. This info came out of a restoration book on B-bodies.Thanks.

The higher performance ones had some beefed up internals like extra pinion planetaries and such.  Still were 727's of course.

the only really significant performance upgrades to a 727 from factory was for the Hemi cars with larger front clutch drum, wider front band, higher governor, and a higher ratio front band lever.

you can have a 3 planetary gear, 4 planetary gear and a 5 planetary gear in front and back, BUT if your car only makes 350 hp, anything above a 3 planetary gear is overkill and not necessary.

I have seen the hemi stuff, but I have never owned it because:

1) its expensive
2) most cars dont need it
3) ... did i mention its expensive? :D

hope that helps.

a stock 727 can handle 500 hp easy.  I know, I had one for 3 seasons do as such.  I think people overthink their needs and requirements when it comes to the ol'faithful 727 when it comes to their builds, because we think if we spend this much or buy these over the top parts, our transmission will be just that much better.  When in all actuality, a stock 727 with a good shift kit is really all the daily street driver requires.

I am not pointing fingers, but I think some people may buy reverse manual valve body transmissions with aluminum rollerized internals just to say at car shows that they have one.  Do they need it, no... but wow... what a bragging point.

Point is, even if you are going to drag race on occasion (or a lot) you really do not need a 800-1200 dollar transmission.  you can build a reliable and "SAFE" 727 with just some basic components and the appropriate "know-how" so that it can handle 500 hp (or below) mopar engine you have.

What would be a good shift kit for a 727 and where is the best place to buy it?Thanks.
