Has anyone done it?

Do you have pictures?

I kinda like the electroluminescent gauges - I wonder how it looks like.

I've never seen or heard of it but I can't imagine it's been done.  It'd take quite a hack job on the dash area to swap them.  Of course, nearly anything is possible so who knows what could be lurking out there?

I wouldn't do it in a nice original car but in a resto mod? why not?

If someone could send me pictures of a first gen cluster (perhaps without the steering wheel in place) I could do a photochop. What size is the cluster btw.?

I wonder if the entire dash would swap right in?

Might be easier.

I think that's the only way you could do it.  The dash frame on a first gen is shaped differently, the bottom edge has the curved portion for the four pods so to make it look right it wouldn't be as simple as swapping the dash cluster and just placing the four instrument pods into the 2nd gen dash would take a some engineering as well.
The wiring changes would be about the only easy part.

Found a couple of pics but I don't know if either one of these can help?

If you notice in the lit up one, you have to get the entire circle to make it work.  The disc in the rear is like a tv screen that glows and then the bezel allows only a portion of the glowing screen to be viewed.
It could be done but not without surgery and would it look "right" once it was in there?
Maybe it's only because I'm used to seeing them that way but for my money, the instrument panel is a major part of the personality of each of these cars.  I'm not a big fan of swapping them out for any of them so my opinion is admittedly biased in that regard.
