Obvisouly you can't beat the appearnce of paint over the decal tail stripes, but you can change the decals if you get tired of the color. Has anyone thought through this when painting their charger? Has anyone got bored with one color and changed out the decal to another?

I think you pretty much touched on the pros and cons already.  I've heard of people changing the decal color but I don't know anyone personally who have done so.  I'd be worried about damaging the paint somehow when removing the old decal.

if the primer has been prepped  properly.... no probs in taking the decal off  :yesnod:  just warm it up with a heat gun ( be very carefull ) or a hair dryer  :yesnod:  ..then just peel it off ...use  a bondo spreader ... to lift a corner up /make a start  !!! if the decal has been on there along time .. .any remaining glue wipe  wipe off with paint shop panel wipe .....  then what i would do ( but not necessary ) compound G3 or equivalent  ..mop up the whole  area ... then degrease again .

.then make sure its free from  dirt etc .. wipe the whole area with a tack rag  first & don't do outside in the wind .

When my 69 r/t gets painted, i'm going to get the rear tail stripe painted on.  I hate the decal, you have to be super careful when washing it so you don't hook your shammy on the edges.  Even being careful you still catch ends, and the letters are peeling off.  I know it's not correct, but i think the painted way for me is better.   :Twocents:  I would never change the color of the stripe or the car, it's an original V2 69 charger r/t, and that's the way it will stay.

I allways would go with a decal! no thinking on pros and cons, simply because an adding must still looking like an added stuff IMHO

I just think the decal looks better , due to the contrast in gloss leval .  :Twocents:

68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .

I vote for the decal.  I changed my stripe from white to black.  Removing the old one is time consuming but not so bad.  I used 3M adhesive remover and an eraser wheel to clean up the paint underneath.

Hmm, sounds like a decal may be the way to go. It's cheaper too. I guess when time comes in a year or two when I go all black I thought I'd try either a sublime or a plum crazy stripe. I can't say I've found any pics of either though.

I would choose paint, and think through it 10 times over, to decide what color to go with!!
Would do it in base, before clear the whole paint job, so there would be no edges.

Paint the stripe on in one color, and then if you change your mind, put a decal on over the painted one and it should line up exactly!  Right?   :shruggy:   :icon_smile_big:  Then if you dont like the decal color just peal it off and have the painted color stripe underneath ready to go.
