Column shifter moves forward and back with no effort

Is the column shifter suppose to be so easy to move without pulling up on the shifter? I don't have the transmission in or the shift linkages. When I rebuilt the steering column, I didn't even mess with the shifter parts except I removed the shifter handle. I want to make sure before I bolt down the steering wheel.

The only time i need to pull my column shifter back is when i go to/from PARK. Im not sure if this is correct either. lol

Mine slides through the gears with such ease. But I don't know if it will get like it should and lock up when I shift to or from park after I hook the linkages up.
