1970 2 & 4 barrel 383 engines were blue.... P4349217.    High performance 383 engines were orange... P4349216

So what was the difference between the regular 383 4 Barrel vs the High Perf 383 in 1970? The color only?
I thought that all 4 barrel 383's in Chargers were high performance and had 335HP w/o air and 330HP with air.

So if you have a 383 4 Barrel 1970 Charger 500 is does not necessarily mean that the engine was a HP?

histoy

From what I've read the 4 barrel was rated at 330 hp @ 5,000 rpm, and the HP was rated at 335 hp @ 5,200 rpm.   I believe that the HP engine should have an HP stamped by the 383 on the front of the block.

Current research indicates that 69 and 70 Chargers with automatics and cars with A/C and either tranny would have the blue 330 horse engine. 69 and 70 cars with four speeds seem to have the orange HP engine. No documented 68 Chargers with an HP engine have surfaced yet.......however, research continues.... :scope:

The only way to document which engine the car recieved is via the broadcast sheet. If you have a 68, 69 or 70 383-4bbl Charger and the broadcast sheet showing the engine assembly code, it would be nice to know what is on the sheet especially if you have a four speed car.

So what was the difference between the regular 383 4 Barrel vs the High Perf 383 in 1970? The color only? HP engines got a windage tray, the 440 HP cam and valve spring set up plus a different carb than the 330 horse engines.

I thought that all 4 barrel 383's in Chargers were high performance and had 335HP w/o air and 330HP with air.Standard for the 68-70 Charger was the 330 horse engine. 69 and 70 Chargers with four speeds have been found with the HP engine

So if you have a 383 4 Barrel 1970 Charger 500 is does not necessarily mean that the engine was a HP?Correct. It probably does not have the HP engine especially if it is an automatic or a car with A/C. Again the only way to prove a Charger came with the HP engine is via the broadcast sheet.

This car is a 1970 Charger 500 383 car with automatic on the floor and given the info posted on here it most likely came with a blue engine. Thanks guys!

maybe more like turquoise I think  :shruggy:. Corporated blue was used on 72s and laters era

Wish I could find the VIN if my Dad's old 68.  He claims it was a 383 HP 4 speed.

 Only problem is, the car's been long gone for many years.  He says he wrote the VIN down somewhere, but we've yet to find it.

...and the VIN doesn't tell you which version the car recieved. Only the broadcast sheet can.

Where is it on the broadcast sheet?

The sheet layout for all three years is different but you are looking for a three digit code on all three sheets.

On a 68 Sheet, the number is on the second group of numbers from the bottom, fourth block over under ENGINE

On a 69 sheet, it's on the right hand side of line three under ENGINE

On a 70 sheet, it's on line four, the second group in under ENGINE
