Anyone know the weight difference between a CJ5 and a Scout II?

Someday I'm going to get myself another project and I'm pretty much set on getting a '72-'74 Scout II but I'm under the impression the Jeep CJ5s are a lot lighter. I also heard from a coworker that people have been getting good fuel mileage by putting small diesel engines in the CJ5s because they're light. :shruggy: I'm guessing the Scouts are heavier. Anyway, just thinking out loud here.

I just looked and Scout IIs seem to have ranged between 4800 and 5400 #s depending on models/options.

IIRC part of that was due to their boxed frame rails?
Sounds good.

I remember my '74 Scout II was heavy as hell when I was pushing it.  :D

Found a weight for the '78 CJ5 listed as 3750 #s (w/standard equipment).

Hope that helps.

If it matters, Scouts are cooler. :coolgleamA: :2thumbs:

Thanks. I think Scouts are way cooler too but apparently they're much heavier so the mileage suffers. Those box frames are tough as nails and I think the body panels are a lot more substantial too. I've owned a '71 IH pickup, a '73 Scout II and a '79 Traveler. I'd love to get another early to mid-70s Scout after the Charger is finished.

These half doors are cool.

:iagree:
I had a '78 Scout II that was a big rust bucket but it had an early model 392 in it and would haul some serious ass (when I could keep it running anyways) I sold it a few months back for $500 'cause the transmission locked up in it :rotz:.

Current MoPars:
1968 Charger. 318 Out of commission:(
1975 Dart Swinger. 225 Pops daily ride.
1990 Dodge Ram. 360FI My daily ride.
2007 Magnum R/T. 5.7 Family wagon.

I once owned a Scout II 74 XLC back in 2000.
I loved it. It rattled and rattled alot but the engine was awesome torque. It had a 304 in it with the 2bbl. Turning radius was excellent.
If I still had it, I would've re done that front leaf spring suspension they had. It just made you bounce over rough areas.

No doubt a ton heavier than a CJ.

We had a '78 Scout II with the Continental 304 in it.  The engine was unstoppable.  The frame was ultra-strong.  The body....not so much.

I say you get yourself the Scout just for the cool points and then add one of these.

A Cummins 3.9 4bt.  A little 4 cylinder diesel that can be found for cheap in countless step vans.  There are pages all over the web on doing conversions.

I wonder what kind of fuel economy you could get with one of those in a Scout? I bet they have lots of torque. :yesnod:

I've heard mid twenties and better.

There is one for sale out of a wrecked van in Jacksonville florida on Craigslist.  The guy is asking a thousand bucks which seems like a decent deal.

What nice about them is the mileage stays pretty consistant whether you're driving down the freeway or crawling around in the woods. And as long as you have decent traction you just climb up the hills with little or no throttle.
