What's the difference between orange, black and chrome (never seen one)?

Black is suppose to be a stock replacement.  Orange is suppose to be an upgrade from the black.  Chrome is more of a street/ strip unit.  Gold is for all out racing.

I remember more people here having issues with the orange box a lot

Ha, I've got a blue one  :pity: any ideas where that fits in the power lineup?
I also have a red and 2 silver ones, I have been meaning to pick a fine day and swap them out to see if any differences exist. We have a club drag day coming up soon, it might be a good opportunity to see what the old bus is capable of

Black, I think good up to 5K RPMs
Blue, I thing good up to 5,5K
Orange, up to 6.5K
Chromed, up to 8K
Gold, up to 12K

Forgett those anyway, Get the Rev-N-Nator

Honestly, I didn't even know they made a blue one.  Guess you can learn something new everyday. :scratchchin:  Thanks for the heads up

Cool, Thanks Nacho
I carry a spare in the trunk, but I can't see justifying a rev n ator for a while yet

when you get two Chromed ECUs failed in couple of weeks like I did, will find the reason to get the Rev-n-nator ;).

I went through at least one chrome control box per season, I think it was in part due to the blue 'racing' voltage regulator box they recommend you install with the 'hotter' HEI. Car would run fine, then suddenly just not spark when you'd go to start it. I kept a screwdriver and spare control box in the glove box so I would not get stranded.

I finally installed a standard black voltage regulator, headlights no longer go super-bright, dim, super-bright; amp gauge actually reads at all amps instead of just 0 and +40, and installed a new MSD ProBillet distributor and MSD digital 6AL. Got rid of the resistor block, cleaned up a TON of crappy wiring; I would not even work on my friend's car unless he popped for a new distributor & 6AL, they're THAT much better than the HEI, I think.

Quit putzing around and just upgrade to a 6AL, you will not believe how much better it is! And you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner!

My two cents.

Christopher.

I have only seen it in red. You can get male (like mine) or female cap. I like the NHRA look of the male studs & the retainer 'hat' screwed down on top of it all. I suppose you could get the female cap & tape off the contactors & paint the cap black, if that's the look you desire.

The cap is actually a slightly smaller diameter to clear the head better.

I wish MSD made a plug and play box similar to the MP Orange Box or Rev-N-nator. I'm not going to chop up my new harness to accomodate an MSD.

no need to chop up the harness that I'm aware of. All one really needs to hunt down if running the stock elec. Dist. Would be another plug to wire to the MSD Wiring pigtail that is supplied. Once done, it does away with a lot of the factory wires. So, you will have to tape them up. All other wires are supplied.

My wiring was already a crapshoot rat's-nest. The MSD only cleaned-up my mess. One hot, one ground, one hot on run, a tach trigger wire & an ignition ground-out wire, and the two wires that go to the dist, are what I remember. I put my 6AL box up front where the washer reservoir normally goes to keep it cool, plus most of the wires could be made short by mounting it there. It'd also go well on the firewall above the heater blower motor, if you care to preserve your washer reservoir. I always thought I'd put a reservoir where the battery is, now, if I ever move it to the trunk. I have absolutely no need for a washer res, I stop & clean my windshield if I hit a swarm of bugs. Lol.
