I have my car timed at 14* initial and 35* total timing. I am using the blue bushing with 1 light silver and 1 light blue spring. I am sitting at a stop light and I hammer the throttle hitting the shift light at 5700 rpm going thru all 4 gears and there is no pinging. Totally floored the whole way thru. The car feels good and strong. I hear no pinging. So I start to cruise. I'm in 3rd gear and I give it alittle gas and I can start to hear it ping. The motor is 10.3:1. I am using Union 76 91 octane. Does it sound like it is the gas? Not enough octane?

Disconnect the vacuum advance.

The dist. is MSD. No vacuum advance. I just took the cap and rotor off and the springs are intact. Back in Oct. I had to change my magnetic p/u in the dist. because of no spark issue. It ended not being the p/u but just a terminal connection problem. :flame:

You need to change your curve, put in a slightly stiffer spring on one of those and it should clear up.

I live in Nor Cal too and have been having pinging issues also. The 91 is more like 88. :yesnod:
Thinking about a cam swap.

My wife is running into that problem with her 2000 honda civic... and its because of the 10% ethanol switch... morons, absolute morons, jack up the cost of food, and living, and get an inferior product that gets much less mpg.

Ricky, were you lugging the motor in 3rd gear ? It sounds like a load of bad fuel to me...assuming this is a new problem.

When buying premium try to use a premium only pump....not one of those multi grade pumps that deliver several different grades of fuel. If the last guy that filled up pumped 87 into his tank you'll be getting some of that in yours....maybe a gallon or two.  :P

Ron, it sounds like bad gas to me. Like i stated, romping thru all 4 gears, no pinging and it felt good!!!! :icon_smile_big: I think I was lugging a bit in 3rd gear. I'm going to get some 100 octane next week and see for sure if it was the gas.

As Aifilaw says , swop the blue spring out for the heavy silver , sounds like it's advancing too soon , to which you will notice the pinging more so on light throttle.
