This car is in the same town I live in. This was a 1968 Coronet.

I still they're all hilarious and I don't mean that in a spiteful way.  I can't find it now of course, but somewhere around here I have a picture of a local dirt trackers 67 Skylark done up in General Lee colors and sitting on his front lawn at Christmas and yes, he had the lights strung up on it.

this picture just goes to show that not all african-americans view the general lee as an iconic symbol for racism...

or.. his dad just has not seen him riding in this car yet  :scratchchin:

Jim, I remember that one from the NAGLFC site a while back.  That one amazes me.  I admire the effort, but it seems like such a wasted effort.

And it must have been done at least 6-10 years ago, right?  For all that work it would have been so much easier to just repair a real Charger, especially since Chargers were at least a little bit cheaper back then.  Even starting with some other 2dr '68-70 B-body would have been easier & better results.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a side note, that car makes a perfect example of something that I would have done for the DOH movie:  Use some customized cab sections made out of 4dr '68-70 B-bodies for the closeup in-car shots.

On the 4dr models, the roof/greenhouse is something like 3 whole inches taller and a couple inches wider at the top than on the 2dr models.  But the details & appearance of the windshield/roof/vent windows/A-pillars are all very similar on both 2drs & 4drs.

So a film crew could take a 4dr cab section, hack out the B-pillar, and change the door/side jamb/quarter skin area for Charger parts (2dr & 4dr overall wheelbases are the same).  Then cut & splice some metal to convert the rear half of the 4dr's roof to cosmetically look more like a Charger (but keep the extra several inches of greenhouse that the 4dr roof structure had).  Then block up the front seats inside the cabin another inch or two, maybe split the difference between the 2dr & 4dr heights.

The untrained eye would never have known the difference from a stock Charger, at least on a closeup shot.  But you could have seen the inside of the whole car a lot better on camera with that several extra inches of glass area.  It would have made even more of a difference when the camera was inside the car, looking out while driving.  It would have the effect of visually dropping the "beltline" of the whole car in a subtle way.

(Not to mention the fact that 4drs are still sorta cheap.  They're not such a crime to hack up for camera-car work!)

My favorites are the GL's from across the big pond. They are real imaginative over there! :icon_smile_big:

That Coronet doesn't look so good these days. I don't think it runs anymore. It just sits under a carport with a car cover on it. I too always remembered this car and it blew my mind when I found out I now live just down the street from it.

Good point on the conversion ideas. With the metal out there now, you can build practically an entire Charger as is, a 4 door donor would just make it a whole lot easier. And for stunt use, you wouldn't have to take it too far.

Mike DC

I'm wondering when we'll see a full-blown 4dr GL built for some reason or another.

At Dukesfest, every year they're always swamped with kids in line for the GL rides.  And they just get owners of the replicas to do it, so the've never got enough GLs up for the job all afternoon.  (And every time anyone lets one of the TV stunt drivers into a GL for some fun, they beat the car to pieces in a matter of minutes.)

Seems like building a 4dr GL would be the ideal way to do that.  Hack the B-pillars out, change the front clip (maybe see what you could do about welding on a Charger's tail end too), and cram half a dozen kids into the front & rear bench seats for each trip.

The basic B-body would be cheap to source compared to a real Charger.  And all the mechanical tricks from the 2dr Chargers would 100% carry over.

Besides Mopar I also am kinda of an Audi fan.
This one looks like sh*t but believe it or not but it has 750 HP @ the wheels. It's built by some crazy guys out of Sweden.....

This is the proof of it :

Bad 69 Charger

I know you guys poke fun at general lees but being that it is the most recognized car in the world the show did make our cars worth more money and hard to find parts to be made again, years ago you could not find half of these parts we all look for, i know a lot of people hate it that a lot of chargers were destroyed in the making of dukes of hazzard but if you look at it like this they used 68, 69 & some 70's, about 320+ were killed and dodge from what i have read made 89,000 just in 1969. so add up all of the 68, 69 and 70 chargers. 320 doesn't seem like a big number, some people on here act like they only made a couple of hundred of them but this was just my 2 cents for the day, we can look at the acting now and say it was bad but in 1978 when we were kids loving the show it wasn't that bad.  Ben

Ben,

I agree 100%, the General Lee made the 1969 Dodge Charger the most recognized car on the planet. It made the car values worth more than most Mopar guys ever imagined. In '88 you could buy a decent R/T for a couple grand..NOW.... :o

the charger was an icon long before the t.v. show...
it's widly recognised as the best looking of the mopars if not all muscle cars.
I'm glad you dukes fans have a hobby and bring them back,..
but I am not a fan of the show i think it's as dumb as a can of rocks.
I enjoyed the movie but hate the t.v. show.
But it's probably a result of demographics i suspect older folks dislike or don't care and younger folks probably like the dukes.
I just wonder if you'r a fan of the car or of the show?..
any other mopars in you guys stable...
no offence, just my opinion...    :slap:  oops, i mean   :pity:

kidding..

chargerhunter

As a kid I was a fan of the show, now as a big 33 yr old kid a BIG fan of the car!! I have owned about every make you can own in the U.S. and 3 of those happen to be Dodge and 1 Chevy and 2 imports. The rest I have owned over the years,,name it and I have probably owned one.

Redneck,, maybe.
Redneck because of the Dukes? No..
Love all 68-69 Chargers? Damn near!

Bad 69 Charger

The show started in 1978 the car had only been out for 9 years, thats not much time to be a icon, the show did make the 69 dodge charger more popular. I started looking for a 69 charger in 04, didn't find one i liked and they all had good prices, then the 05 DOH movie came out then looking for a charger became a lot more expensive i could not believe it, but i lucked out and found one in October 06, the guy even said he bought that charger 4 years before i did for $1000 but i paid $2800 and he didn't do anything to it, just the value went up he said,  I'm not trying to start trouble  on here but without that show it would not be as popular, my opinion and many more i have met in car shows for many years, I am 43 and have been to many car shows, daytona turkey rod run since 1985, i have been around mopars all my life, my dad and i restored a 49 plymouth coupe and put a 383 4 speed, we did a 34 plymouth i drove off at my wedding, but had Chevy's etc through the years,  Ben

JimShine

If you think prices were good in '04, you should have seen them in the 90's.
