My aunt just told me that they had a red one on an auction show that just sold for a million dollars.  They also said that it was the only one in existance.  In all of the pictures that I have seen of this car, it was white.   So how many did they actually make?

To my knowledge they only made the one... but there are a few knock-offs out there.

There was only one.  I forget the story on the white one but I have seen it before on the net.

Wasn't the original one painted a different color at some point in its life?

That's the story I read. The red car was painted white.

I have a recent magazine article kicking around somewhere with pictures of an almost perfect knock-off of the original, but it's still a reproduction. I believe the article does go on to mention the original, and the fact that it resides in a private collection... and I think they gave a name as well.

Here is the clone a guy made. I talked with him and it only took a year to build. There was a ton of fabrication involved.

ok that makes more sense  , I know jim built the silver car from pictures because the original car was presumed lost ? or hidden for years , then the red car came out of it's private hiding place.   Jim still did a great job reproducing it from just black and white photo's.

Yes, there is actually two of these cars....

The Original - which was sold by Chrysler to a preferred dealer, who ended up giving it to his son. He's the one that painted it white, and did some mild customizing.
It was placed into storage for quite awhile, and in that interum, Jim Rodebaugh built the replica car.

The Clone - Built out of a Polara, this silver car was shown for quite awhile and was the only car seen at car shows for that timeframe. That is, until the original resurfaced.

The original was purchased by a noted concept car collector, Joe Bortz.
He had the original restored, painted dark red, and recently auctioned for $1,100,000 at the RM auctions.

The Clone was recently listed for sale on the web, appraised at $65,000.

As a sidenote, the original that Chrysler made was done with a Polara as well.
