I went to LA last February to buy my cuda. I shipped it to Belgium, the ship had to make a detour because of a strike at the port of Antwerp (my home town) and now the custom officer start to act difficult.  :flame:
They imagine that a guy who can buy a muscle car in the States is rich so he can pay more import duties and tax.  :brickwall:

My shipping agent will try to charge the usual  6% tax but he isn't optimistic.
The officer wants 10% import duties and then 21% tax on the total.
So he wants me to pay an extra 4 grand before I can pick her up at the warehouse.

Monday I need to call back to check the outcome. If not I am going to try to talk to the officer.
Wish me luck.

neither do I
it all depends if that officer will declare the car as a historical vehicle or as a common vehicle.
And because there is no written guideline, he makes the decision. Sux!!!

Oh, it will!! It is not Guatemala or something like that over here!!
Here in Norway we have straight forward rules, even if they suck!! We pay a one time fee (salvage fee, registration fee) that is about 900 us.
Then we must pay 25 % import tax, of froforma invoice that follows the car.
The rule that it needs to meet, to get it like this, and to get it imported as a historical car, is that it is 30 years old, or more.
It sucks, but it is at least straight forward :shruggy:
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

bull

What a hassle. Hopefully it turns out better than it's looking.

suntech

It does suck!!!!! a 50k car will cost us in the ballpark of 67 K here, in the end, with shipping, tax, and all that crap!! :shruggy:

that is really unreal, you have been waiting far too long for that car, higher fees or not! on a positive note. once it is there, don't they go for much more money when sold in country?? i have seen some outrageous prices on some mopars that are already over there.. including a couple i had shipped overseas a year or 2 ago

Have you PERSONALLY been down to see the guy?

Its harder to be a prick to people in person.

I would play really nice guy with him in an attempt to get the better outcome.

If it goes the other way then I would raise a storm.

Or what happens if you just send it to another port?

torqueflite

Hey CB , you just have to play along with them , stay cool and focused on getting the best outcome for yourself. I hope it goes good for you.
The amount of extra money that I had to pay for MAF to 'clean' my car, ::) three times , ::) because THEY  found some spider webs was crazy.

Sad to these story's over and over again. Sometimes you would start to think we ARE in Guatemala...

It's the same when buying parts in the US and shipping them to over here. They charge you import tax fees like they want to.

The other day I bought a pair of reverse lights for my Charger, they were rusted badly but I bought them for the glasses cuz mine are gone.
I payed 30 dollars for them on E-bay. When they arrived the jokers charged me 50 dollars import tax fees.

I can't seem to get the fact that they even can get away with this legally because you can easilly prove your car is aged over 30 years so there's no discussion about the 6% tax rule.
Rich guy or not

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

man ...sorry to hear you don't have it yet CB  :-\ I know it's expensive to ship overseas, but import tax fee on top of it  :brickwall:. that sucks. on the bright side, maybe the weather's getting better for the drive home  :shruggy:

well actually I live 9 miles from the docks. I called the agent again today, he didn't get in touch with the right officer.
He will be following up my car and call me back tomorrow or the day after.
They keep postponing the pick up.

I really start to think that cuda is bewitched... :icon_smile_dissapprove:

Seriously though, sorry you're having to deal with so much crap to get a car. :pity:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I was mistaken CB 6% tax rate is when you import a car of 30 years or older from inside the Eropean Union. When it comes from outside it they can legally charge you the full 21% of tax.
So I'm affraid that when the boys who decide the tax charge are in a bad mood or jaleous because you can buy a gas guzzling American car and they can't, well I guess you are screwed big time then.

I hope this does'nt turn into a bitter pill for ya.
Best of luck.

Hi,

when you buy a car inside the european community you don't have to pay any import tax.
But the european countries act differently on how much they charge for import duties on claasic cars. In germany it is 10% customs and 19% taxes on top as long as the car has not been built before 1950......

Good luck Christian

And things like these import taxes are what makes the Euro strong right now against the dollar . If the U.S. were smart the would levy massive import AND export taxes too. Sorry but it is all economics and politics .You can't have import taxes on just the things you want .
