I changed rear gears last summer and things seemed fine now I checked the rear shoes and I had grease dripping out on the shoes, also the axles were loose, so I tightened them with the cog on the rt side ,now I have no play,.Will this stop the grease leaking out the Bering ends?Or do I need to take it all apart and put new Axel seals?

mikepmcs

sounds like a seal issue to me.
changing end play IMHO would not stop a leaky seal.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Sounds like you may have damaged a seal when removing / replacing the axles. No, "0" end play will not stop a leak... put it back to normal spec.  :Twocents:

So The big Question is HOW do I change these seals,I guess everything comes apart again, but just from the axel ends again, then take them to a good garage. Then how to adjust them again? Thanks; you guys are great helpers. They don't leak alot but just enough to get on the brake pads, then NO BRAKES

mikepmcs

shouldn't be that hard Tommy

don't know if this will help but can't imagine it would be any more difficult than a wheel bearing seal.

Remove axles.  Use the axle shaft to pry the old seals out.  Use a large socket and extension to drive the new seals in.  Put a drum on the axle backwards to help slide the axle in without sliding it on the seal.  Do the drivers side first.  Loosen the adjuster and install the passenger side axle.  Set end play .008" to .018".  That's a little rocking in and out.  Don't forget the adjuster locking tab.

I put new seals in last fall, but over greased the Bering's,some of that has come out the ends it's not gear oil.Ill put new shoes and turn the drums, and see what happens.Thanks.
