Until what year did Chrysler use 340 engines?

I found an ad for a supposed '79 340 engine from a Dodge pickup for a good price.  I thought they stopped using the 340 after '73, or was this just in the Charger & Challenger?  I think this guy might be confused about what is probably a 360.

1973 was the last year. Someone could have easily swapped it in there though so it is worth checking out.

The size is stamped on the left front of the block, behind the power steering pump, just under the head.

Stamped?  Shouldn't it be cast into the block?

He's calling me back today to tell me what size it is.

not cast, actually stamped in the block right below where the head and the block meet facing the front of the truck, right behind the power steering pump/reservoir... you will most likely need a knife to scrape away the grease and paint to see the numbers

im pretty sure he meant cast-let us kno what you find, people do some wierd stuff to keep things running, i pulled a buick 455 out of a 78 chevy 3/4 ton truck once, had a diesel and the bolt pattern on the tranny was the same-every one walked by it at the junkyard, and i scored it for 200 bucks!

I thought I remembered my original 318 having the engine size cast as part of the block.

Turns out its a 360, probably still going to pick it up though.   :2thumbs:

EDIT: A '79 360 is the same style small block as a '73 318, correct?  All the accessories should interchange, etc?

EDIT Again: I looked it up and apparently changes weren't made to the small blocks until 1987.
